Allison Rogers hit the go-ahead bucket with 42 seconds left and the Elkton girls basketball withstood a wild final 20 seconds to post a 48-46 Valentine's Day victory over visiting Harford Tech. After Rogers' foul line jumper, the Elks tied up a Tech player to force a jump ball with the possession arrow in Elkton's favor.
The Cobras needed to foul but faced a unique problem. they had only committed three team fouls to that point. Tech fouled three times in 10 seconds and the next one would send Elkton to the free throw line for a one-and-one. But before the Cobras could commit their seventh team foul, Elkton turned the ball over on an inbounds pass with 10.4 seconds left. Tech had three chances at a potential game-tying shot but missed each time before the Elks' Erika Woodin grabbed a rebound a second before the buzzer sounded. Vanessa Dunn led Elkton with 15 points. Rogers recorded 11 and Taniece Redden added 10. Tech tallied the first nine points of the game before Redden nailed a three-pointer with 3:06 left in the opening quarter. Elkton ended the period on a 16-2 spurt to grab a five-point lead. The Elks held a 37-34 edge entering the fourth quarter and scored five straight to take their largest lead of the game, 42-34 with 6:03 remaining. Harford Tech responded with a 10-0 to go in front with 2:12 to go. Dunn and Rogers scored sandwiched around a Tech basket to set up the eventual game-winner. Comments are closed.
