Courtney Hardy's career game helped the Elkton girls basketball team top Tome 61-47 Wednesday afternoon, January 3. Hardy poured in 32 points to power the Elks to the victory. It is the most points Hardy has scored at any level, surpassing her previous best of 24 in an AAU contest. She knew early it was going to be a big night. "I really started off the game on a hot streak," Hardy said. "I started out with a bunch of points and once I start scoring I get my energy up and then I try to keep scoring. Usually I don't score until the second quarter and start off slow but when I started scoring at the very beginning of the first quarter I try to keep going." Hardy had 19 points in the first half as the Elks built a 29-24 lead. The visitors broke the game open by beginning the third quarter with an 11-2 spurt.
Elkton was able to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Bohemia Manor at the Cecil College holiday tournament. "It was very important," said Hardy. "When we lost to Bo Manor we made stupid mistakes. So we watched Hudl, we reviewed everything, we came back and fixed our mistakes. It was very important to bounce back as soon as we could." Tome was able to control the tempo for stretches of the game and keep Elkton from running, but the Elks were able to adjust. "We really just pushed until the end," Hardy said. "We were a little slow out there but it was okay. We kept trying to learn from our mistakes and kept pushing as hard as we could…I think this shows we might not start off as good as we want to, but we can always come back and push ourselves and we can pull away a win when we really want to."
