Rising Sun's girls track and field team has high numbers and higher hopes. The Tigers have 35 athletes, the most in recent years. "There is a lot of talent throughout," coach Jim Burkhardt says. Returning regional champion Heather Martin will be competing in pole vault as well as other field events, trying to get better than her top mark last year of 8-7 which she achieved during regionals.
Valerie Bragg will be joining her in the pole vault and was last year's fastest 100 meter sprinter. Madison Webb will be returning as a 400 meter specialist, hoping to get times in the low one minute range. Cameryn Dugger is coming off a successful 300 meter hurdles season, where she was third in the county as a freshmen. Coming from a successful cross country season, runners Emma Wheeler (800 - 1600m), Arianna Wheeler (800-1600m), Josie Brown (800-1600-3200), Autumn Russell (800-1600-3200), Kiona Brady (800-1600), and Alanah Bell (1600-3200) should all be keeping stride with the region's best, with the help of a handful of newcomers that should round out a successful distance crew, Burkhardt said. It could be somewhat of a rebuilding year for the Tiger boys, but there are several athletes with potential. Four Rising Sun boys advanced to the state meet but discus thrower Alex Kerns is the only one back. Josh Anderson (shotput) graduated and Isaiah Vass (high jump) and Marquis Topp (triple jump) both transferred. Sophomore Charles Thurston is coming off a season PR last year of just over 36 feet, and Burkhardt is hoping he will hit the 40-foot mark by season's end. Martin Stillwell is expected to be one of the fastest 100-200 sprinters in the county. Bryce Calhoun, coming off a successful but disappointing end to the indoor track season, will be focusing on the high jump where he hopes to break 5-8. Jose Ramirez showed promise last year in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 100 meter relay teams and will be focusing on his 400 meter running with goals of obtaining sub 54 seconds. Sean O'Donnell is Rising Sun's best returner in the 800 and hopes to get closer to the 2:05 mark by year's end. "We have a lot of new faces which will be interesting to see how they turn out," Burkhardt said. Comments are closed.
