New coach. New pitching staff. Same lofty goals. The Rising Sun softball team has undergone some changes, but the Tigers fully expect to challenge for the region title. First year coach Pete Veasey must replace four-year starting pitcher Amanda Huff, but he has high hopes for a trio of promising hurlers.
Julianna Eckman, Megan Keene, and Liz Hayden are all competing for time in the circle. Senior Taylor Allen returns at catcher. "She's strong and very aggressive behind the plate," Veasey said. Sophomore Lexi Osborne will play first base, "We're expecting a big season," Veasey said. "She has really improved her glove, has a strong arm, and is very knowledgeable." Freshman Madison Foard has been impressive in practice and will play second base. Sophomore Paige Bradford is back at shortstop. "It's hard to get the ball by her," said Veasey. "She has good range to both sides." Junior Brooke Bower will be the third baseman and brings a potent bat. "She's coachable and knowledgeable," Veasey said. Aly Jackson, Miranda O'Donnell, Jess Borchardt, and Kaylie Linman are part of the outfield equation. "The expectations are sky-high as usual," said Veasey. "We have a lot of talent returning from last year. Pitching is a big loss, but I'd put our pitchers up with anybody's. Their control is unbelievable. As long as we stay healthy, I expect big things."
