Last season, the Rising Sun boys basketball team lost to Tome in the opener. The Tigers made sure it would not happen two straight years. Rising Sun rolled to a 69-36 victory over the visiting Titans Friday night. "It was just how we wanted to start the season," Rising Sun coach Matt Haack said. "We wanted to start with a win, come out with a lot of energy, high intensity on defense, try to execute on offense, and just be aggressive in general." The Tigers took command early. Jesse Shields hit a three-pointer to start the game. Tome's Wyatt Martinuk made a free throw and three-pointer to give his team the lead for the only time all game.
The Tigers tallied 10 straight points and never looked back. Rising Sun led 21-11 at at the end of the first quarter and 37-20 at halftime. The Tigers posed some problems for Tome with a halfcourt trap which forced turnovers and kept Tome from finding a rhythm on offense. "We've got some length. We've got some good 6-6, 6-7," said Haack. "We have a couple swing players who are 6-3, 6-4. We've got a ways to go. We still need to develop that and really fine-tune it. And I think when we do that we can some problems for teams with that halfcourt trap." Shields finished with 12 points and two assists. Brandon Aro added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Spencer McDermott provided 10 points. Kyle Andersen collected six points and four boards and Naim Collins contributed six points and three steals. "Personally, I didn't live up to what I was expecting to do," Aro said. "We had a very solid team effort from everyone. The scoring was very split up. The defense was great. But there's always room for improvement." The Tigers didn't dwell on last season's loss to Tome. "We moved on from last year," said Aro. "We obviously wanted to avenge the loss. They lost some players and we lost some players. We definitely felt like we were stronger from the get-go and we proved it." Comments are closed.
