Rising Sun's 10-11 baseball All-Stars rallied again. This time, the comeback came up a little short. Four County Little League held on for a 17-15 victory Thursday night at Eder Park to knock Rising Sun out of the state tournament. Playing from behind all game, Rising Sun trailed 17-10 entering the bottom of the sixth. Jonathan Stanley led off with a walk. AJ Lawrence singled to right and Caleb Leffew walked to load the bases. Ryan Davisson followed with an RBI bloop single to make it 17-11.
After a strikeout, Blake Flaugher blasted a grand slam to left to bring Rising Sun within two. Four County brought in Evan Schwartz and he retired the next two hitters to end Rising Sun's season. Rising Sun found itself in a big hole right from the start. Four County led 3-0 three batters into the game and 5-0 at the end of the top of the first inning. Eli Weigle clubbed a three-run homer. A run scored on an error and Stephen Curry plated a run with a groundout. Weigle and Brady Etzel had consecutive doubles in the second to up the lead to 6-0. Rising Sun tallied twice in the bottom of the second. Stanley popped a hit over the head of the third baseman and Lawrence ripped a double to left-center. After an out, Davisson delivered an RBI single in the hole and Nicholas VanBergen drove in a run on a groundout. Four County responded with seven runs in the third to go up 13-2. Justin Nicholls and Schwartz each had an RBI single and Weigle's two-run single made it 10-2. Winning pitcher Colby Jaeb added a run-scoring hit. Rising Sun responded with four runs in the home half. Mason McNeill belted a home run. Another run scored on an error and Tyler Hogue provided a two-run single. The first baseman McNeill and shortstop Stanley turned a double play in the top of the fourth but Four County did some damage with two outs. Schwartz tripled and scored on a Weigle single. Weigle scored from second when Etzel reached on a high chopper off the plate. Rising Sun stayed within striking distance by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stanley had an RBI single and Lawrence followed with a two-run double to left-center. A run scored on an error to trim the deficit down to 15-10. With two outs and runners on the corners, the Four County shortstop Schwartz snared Steven Snyder Jr.'s line drive to end the inning. In the top of the fifth, Curry gave Four County some insurance with a two-run homer to center. Reliever Garrett Averill worked around a one-out single by Cole McCulloch to keep Rising Sun off the board in the bottom of the fifth. Rising Sun reliever Matthew Trout kept his team in the game by retiring Four County's 2-3-4 hitters in order in the top of the sixth. Rising Sun made things interesting but came up two runs short.
