North East senior Collin Beck is going out in style. Beck was the only county wrestler to reach the semifinals and guaranteed himself a top four finish. Beck (152) won his first two matches Saturday – the first day of the MPSSAA wrestling tournament at Cole Field House in College Park. After losing in the semifinals, he met rival Zac Zacerous of Perryville for the fourth and final time, the last one coming in the consolation semifinals Saturday night.
Beck nipped the Panthers' sophomore 3-1 in sudden victory and was scheduled to wrestle for third place when the tournament resumed Monday afternoon. Zacerous won the first two meetings with Beck but Beck bounced back to win the region title match and prevailed again in the state consolation semis. Zacerous was set to wrestle in the fifth place match Monday. It was not an easy road for Beck, who opened with a 3-1 triumph over Sinjin Shoop of Williamsport. Beck trailed 1-0 before tying the match on an escape with 15 seconds left in the third period. He scored the winning takedown with four seconds to go in the first overtime period. In the quarterfinals, Beck pinned Craig Worpell of Hereford. Catoctin's Charlie Perella defeated Beck 9-4 in the semifinals. Zacerous received a forfeit in the opening round because his scheduled opponent had a skin infection. In the second round, Zacerous suffered a 16-1 technical fall loss to Justin Couto of Calvert.
