The Perryville Panthers girls basketball team soared to a 39-11 victory over visiting Rising Sun Tigers on Tuesday, January 3. The Panthers took the lead after scoring 25 points in the first half while holding the Tigers to two points. The Panther defense kept the Tigers from moving the ball allowing them to take the lead of 25-2 at the end of the half. Rising Sun managed just one point, on a foul shot in the third period, while Panthers put 12 more on the board bringing the score to 37-3. The Tigers outscored Perryville in the fourth, adding eight points but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers lead of 39-11. Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt was not expecting to be as far behind as her team was. "Its just the fundamentals. We are having trouble catching and passing the ball. I told them tonight though that we have to dig deep and we are never going to fold." The Tigers are turning over the ball too often and a lack of confidence with their ball handling, coach Stoudt said. The Panthers communication skills and their height advantage was all the Panthers needed to win. "Until about two or three minutes left in the game we were talking the whole time," said Perryille head coach Mike Blizzard. "Getting the ball inside. We had a height advantage. They (Rising Sun) lost their center, they had some injury issues and getting to the foul line (for us) and eventually making some things (baskets)." "I think they played aggressive, they forced us to turn the ball over, they out rebounded us and have more size than us," said Stoudt. Teri Wennerstein was Perryville's top scorer with 21 points. She also obtained five rebounds and three steals. Bea Muscella added seven points. "Wennerstein had a great game," said Blizzard. "Muscella played a very good game (coming) off the bench. She seemed to ignite our defense. We were playing well and we were holding them but, she was starting to get some of the steals. She has got very quick hands and she turned us around as well." For the Tigers, the teams top two players of the game were Ally Bradford with six points and Maddie Foard with six rebounds. "Foard works her tail off all the time. She had trouble getting the ball to drop, but she never quits for us. It doesn't matter what we are down by she always plays hard," said Stoudt. "We have not lost a league game yet and that was our goal. We come in and lay an egg in practice tomorrow (January 5), then all of this was a waste of time. It's to get better everyday, come into this gym tomorrow and for 95 minutes, to get better and get ready for North East," said Blizzard. "A lot of our offense has to come from our defense, so we are still working on that. Some of it is still not where we want it," said Blizzard. Stoudt plans to continue working on fundamentals. "In four weeks we don't want to be making the same mistakes we are making now," said Stoudt. Comments are closed.
