Perryville senior Chris Brown capped off his record-setting career with a state championship. Brown defeated Snow Hill's Camden Fischer 3-0 in the 120-pound final to finish the season with a record of 42-0. Brown's closest call came in the semifinals Saturday morning when he needed overtime to post a 9-1 triumph over Cody Matthews of Mountain Ridge. Brown used a Granby roll to score a reversal midway through the second overtime session and quickly put Matthews on his back to go up 6-1. Brown added three more points in the third OT period.
Brown is the second state champion in his immediate family. His father, Andy, an assistant coach for the Panthers, won state titles in 1987 and 1989. The elder Brown, who wrestled for Wilde Lake, defeated Rising Sun's Wily Townsend in the 1989 final. Chris Brown finishes his career with a record of 158-9, the most victories of any Cecil or Harford county wrestler. He defeated Fischer 5-0 the week before in the region championship bout. Brown had lost in the state finals the previous two seasons. Rising Sun's Nelson Phillips placed fourth, Joe Juergens (126) was fifth, and Will Barton was sixth. Bohemia Manor's Trybus brothers each placed. Jake Trybus (138) and Cody Trybus (106) each finished fifth. Kyle Trybus (113) was sixth. Elkton's Tim Taylor finished sixth at 120 pounds.
