Some members of the Perryville Senior Division softball All-Stars don't know what it's like to lose a district tournament. Others were celebrating a district championship for the first time. Together they claimed the 2014 Little League Maryland District 5 crown with a 4-2 triumph over North East Monday night in Havre de Grace. It's the sixth district championship for winning pitcher Emily Phillips and several of her teammates including Kadi Davis, Jordyn Pollitt, Brooke Reynolds, Kyleigh Knell and Carly White.
It was the second district title for Alysa Conway. Ashley Phillips, Hanna Downes, Sierra Johnson, Alexxus Ritter and Melissa Savin won for the first time. Needing two wins over Perryville to win the title, North East took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before Perryville staged a two-out rally. With two outs and no one on base, Downes reached on an error and Reynolds was hit by a pitch. Emily Phillips ripped an RBI single through the hole to put Perryville on the board and the runners moved up to second and third. The next batter, White, crushed a two-run double just out of the reach of the centerfielder to give Perryville a 3-2 lead. Davis then sliced an RBI double down the right field line to make it 4-2. Emily Phillips wriggled out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth and then retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the title. The Senior Division softball state tournament will be held at Delmar Little League beginning July 11. Comments are closed.
