Mason McNeill's go-ahead grand slam highlighted a 12-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth as Rising Sun's 10-11 baseball team stayed alive in the state tournament with a 14-4 triumph over Easton Tuesday night at Eder Park. "It's amazing," McNeill said. "When I heard I was going to make the All-Star team, I just wanted to be the hero of the team. And this game just worked out for me that way." Trailing 4-2, Steven Snyder Jr. walked to start the decisive uprising. After an out, Cole McCulloch walked and Matthew Trout singled sharply to load the bases. McNeill deposited a pitch over the tall fence in right field to give Rising Sun a 6-4 lead. "Right when I hit it, I didn't think it would carry all the way," McNeill said. "But when I rounded first and looked at it, I just knew it was gone." Rising Sun was far from finished. Caleb Leffew, Tyler Hogue, and Snyder had consecutive RBI singles. Rising Sun added three more runs on two Easton errors. McNeill drilled an RBI double and then scored the game-ending run on an error. Blake Flaugher, who came on in relief of AJ Lawrence, earned the win. Rising Sun next plays Thursday night at 6 at Eder Park. Both teams tallied twice in the first inning. Blake Flaugher led off the bottom half with a single, moved to second on Cameryn Hyre's bunt, and to third on a Trout single. With two outs, Jonathan Stanley bounced a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Rising Sun did not score again until the fifth-inning explosion. Easton upped its lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a solo homer by Jack Dukehart. Six outs away from seeing its season end, Rising Sun rallied. With the bases loaded, McNeill sent a towering shot into the night. "[My coach] told me to just relax at the plate and swing at the pitch I wanted to swing at," said McNeill. "And that pitch, I just wanted to kill that one." That's exactly what he did. Photos from Saturday's state tournament victory Click HERE to view photos from Rising Sun's district championship win.
