A gutsy Elkton Major Division softball team wasn't able to muster a third game-tying rally. Elkton lost 8-6 to Delmar in 10 innings in a second round state tournament game Saturday. Elkton came back from a 4-0 deficit in the sixth and tied the game again with a run in the seventh.
But after Delmar plated three runs in the top of the 10th, Elkton only answered with one. Delmar pitcher Megan Smith carried a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning. But three outs away from a loss, Elkton's bats came alive. Hanna Cebenka walked and scored when Karleigh Baumann advanced all the way to third on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Caroline Miller singled to score Baumann. Isabella McGrory then blasted an RBI triple to left-center to make the score 4-3. She scored on a two-out wild pitch to tie the game. Delmar regained the lead in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Catherine Smith doubled to deep left and scored on Autumn Smith's bloop single to center. Down 5-4, Elkton tied the game in the home half and nearly won it. With one out, Abby Sprouse bunted for a hit. Cebenka walked. After a pop out, the runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. Emily Leonard hit a bloop single just inside the right field foul line. The tying run Sprouse scored easily but the potential winning run Cebenka was thrown out at the plate. Elkton argued that Cebenka was obstructed by the third baseman but the play stood. Elkton reliever Olivia Wheel retired Delmar in order in both the eighth and ninth. But Elkton had a runner thrown out trying to steal second in the eighth and stranded runners on first and second in the ninth. After an error to start the top of the 10th, Delmar's Autumn Smith singled to put runners on the corners. The go-ahead run scored on a fielder's choice and Delmar added two more to take an 8-5 edge. Leonard singled to start the bottom of the 10th and, after an out, scored on a fielder's choice grounder by McGrory. McGrory was safe on an error but the next two batters were retired to end the game. Comments are closed.
