The Elkton All-Stars captured the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division baseball tournament by outslugging Chesapeake City 16-13 Sunday afternoon in North East. Elkton scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Gavin Tereszcuk line an RBI single to right to tie it and the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch. Christian Keyes bounced a two-run single to right to give Elkton a three-run lead. Chesapeake City responded in a big way and took the lead with one swing of the bat as Jake Harris blasted a grand slam to right.
Elkton exploded for six runs in the home half of the second. Austin Oliver tied it with a homer to straightaway center. Andy Jones slapped a two-run single which gave Elkton the lead for good. CJ Clark knocked in a run with an infield single and Troy Cherwaty belted a run-scoring ground-rule double to left to make it 10-5. In the top of the third, Harris, who had eight RBIs on the day, drilled a three-run double between the first baseman and the bag and into the right field corner. Evan Reynolds followed with a single to trim Chesapeake City's deficit to 10-9. In the fourth, Keyes added another RBI hit but Chesapeake City centerfielder Jason Cochran threw out a runner at the plate. Elkton tacked on three runs in the bottom half but the feisty Chesapeake City team countered again. Harris drove in a run with a groundout, Reynolds delivered another RBI hit, and Trenton Pierson blasted a two-run homer to left to narrow the gap to 14-13. Elkton added two insurance runs when Keyes doubled to put runners on second and third and the runs scored on a pair of wild pitches. Marcus Ross retired Chesapeake City in order in the top of the sixth to seal the deal. Chesapeake City needed to defeat undefeated Elkton twice to take the title. Comments are closed.
