Perryville's Chris Brown and Rising Sun's Will Barton both made history at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference wrestling tournament. They also each realize there's much more to accomplish.
Brown set a conference and Cecil County record for most career victories on the way to his third league title. He defeated Elkton's Tim Taylor 7-0 in the 120-pound title tilt. "It's been a tough tournament every time I've been in it," Brown said. "There's been good competition throughout and my weight has always been good. To come in and win it three times in a row, even though I lost to Shay (Aberdeen's Shay Velez) my freshman year, he's an amazing wrestler. So coming in and winning it my next three years, it's a big accomplishment." Brown's quarterfinal victory Friday night was the 149th win of his career, surpassing the mark set by Rising Sun's three-time state champion Matt Jackson. "Getting that record is great," said Brown. "Matt Jackson had it before me. Matt Jackson was an outstanding wrestler and he's a great guy. He has actually supported me through this whole process. I've been conversing with him and after I broke it he said congratulations. He was excited it could be me to be the one to break it. It' feel really cool to break to record." Now, Brown can turn his attention to this week's region tournament at North Caroline and chasing the elusive state title. "There has been a lot of pressure about breaking the record," said Brown. "It was good I could get it out of the way the first day at UCBACs instead of it happening at an important match at states which would add that much more pressure. Now it's out of the way and I can focus on my bigger goal of getting a state championship." Barton (160) won his first-ever scholastic championship by posting a 3-1 overtime decision over Edgewood's Shawn Kluchinsky. "He was wrestling defensively the whole match and then in overtime he took a shot and I had good shot defense," Barton said. The Tiger senior appeared to be the fresher of the two wrestlers in the extra session. "I work hard all season to stay in condition to get to this point where I could be in better condition than my opponents," said Barton. Asked if it was the biggest win of his career, Barton made it clear he has higher aspirations. "For now," he said. "Hopefully there are bigger wins in the weeks to come but it feels good to get a first place medal." Bohemia Manor claimed four individual titles en route to a second place finish behind Bel Air in the team standings. Twins Cody Trybus (106) and Kyle Trybus (113) and their brother Jake (138) each captured a UCBAC title. The Eagles' Tyear Castle (132) also prevailed. Cody Trybus (28-3) defeated previously undefeated David Reagan of Bel Air, 11-7. Kyle Trybus (27-4) topped Patterson Mill's Colin McDonald 6-2. Castle (23-9) upended Bel Air's Ryan Beveridge 8-2. Jake Trybus (23-2) posted a 16-6 win over Aberdeen's Daniel Velez. Three other county wrestlers advanced to the finals. Rising Sun's Joe Juergens (126) dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Patterson Mill's Jake Nikkila. Nikkila scored an escape in the third extra session to deny Juergens a third league crown. The Tigers' Nelson Phillips (145) lost 5-0 to Bel Air's Cameron Watts. Bo Manor's Matt Sciamanna (152) was pinned by Bel Air's John Cross. Bel Air (258.5) won the team title followed by Bohemia Manor ((153), Patterson Mill (147), Fallston (139.5), Aberdeen (115), Harford Tech (114.5), C. Milton Wright (114), North Harford (105.5), Rising Sun (104.5), Perryville (88), Elkton (83), Edgewood (44), North East (40), Havre de Grace (23), and Joppatowne (11). Perryville's Zac Zacerous was third at 152 pounds with teammate Dustin Krahn third at 182. The Panthers' Kaine Delancey placed fifth at 195. For Rising Sun, Trevor Roland (113) was fifth and Mason Hoag (170), James Baranski (152) Matt Child (106) were sixth. Comments are closed.
