Rising Sun rallied for six runs in the sixth inning to upend Elkton 7-3 in the baseball opener Saturday. Zach Van Dyke ignited the uprising with his second hit of the day, a single inside the third base bag. Cole Benjamin walked and was replaced by pinch runner Aaron Richardson. Adam Janney laid down a perfectly placed bunt to the third base side. The throw to first was high and wide, allowing Van Dyke to score and putting runners on the corners. Chris Melrath reached on a bunt single on a controversial play to load the bases. Melrath bunted the ball and laid his bat down in front of the plate as headed toward first. The ball appeared to carom off the bat, but the home plate umpire allowed the play to stand. Tommy Stover then coaxed a walk to tie the game. Nick Luciano knocked in the go-ahead run with a sharp single to left. After an out, Sean Goodie drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-3. Another run scored on an error and the sixth run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.
Tiger reliever Cole Benjamin pitched the final two innings to earn the win. Daniel Richardson was the Rising Sun starter. He allowed a run in the top of the first on a two-out single by Scotty Bandy followed by a double to right-center by Colton McCoy. The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the fourth when Van Dyke led off with a single to left and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch. Elkton countered quickly as starting pitcher Chris Roosevelt clubbed a towering two-run homer to straightaway center. Roosevelt managed to keep the Rising Sun offense in check until the decisive rally in the sixth. Comments are closed.
