The Perryville girls lacrosse team's successful season came to an end with a 19-4 loss to Queen Anne's in the region title game last Wednesday in Havre de Grace. Queen Anne's scored the game's first 12 goals before Panthers' sophomore Taylor Poore put her team on the board in the final minute of the first half. Perryville trailed 13-1 at halftime. The highly-skilled and aggressive Lions double- and sometimes triple-teamed the Perryville player with possession of the ball. The Panthers played even with Queen Anne's for the first part of the second half. Freshman Sydnie Bjork tallied twice and junior Merve Akbay added a goal to make it 16-4.
"The first half we were struggling," Perryville coach Mary Dunman said. "The second half we came out and for seven minutes we [hung with them]. We just couldn't break their defense. Their stick checks were unreal. We don't typically play with people who stick check at that caliber. That's a 2A team. They have travel lacrosse and they start in rec when they're in second grade and come out here with complete teams. We don't have that in Cecil County. We're working on it. I'm blessed with these girls and they did a great job." RELATED: Click HERE for girls lacrosse photos from throughout the season. Perryville finishes with a record of 11-4 for the second straight season. The Panthers swept the county foes and won two playoff games. "I'm ecstatic," Dunman said. "We reached and exceeded our goals. They were thinking they would come in this year and not be able to do what they did last year after losing 10 seniors. At midseason, they actually realized they can do this." Bjork (three assists) and Poore each scored six goals to propel Perryville to a 19-5 rout of Elkton. Sam Leonard tallied four times and Hannah Seibert scored a pair of goals. Akbay chipped in a goal. Adrienne Weiman made six saves. The Panthers controlled 22 draws and won 24 groundballs, interdepted three passes, and forced 19 total turnovers. Comments are closed.
