Perryville Sierra Montz capped off an outstanding meet with a state title in the 300 intermediate hurdles at the MPSSA Track and Field Meet Saturday at Morgan State University. Montz also placed fourth in the triple jump and seventh in the high hurdles to go along with a third place finish in Thursday's long jump. Montz led the Panthers to a school-best second place finish in the team standings. Manchester Valley won the team title with 102.5 points while Perryville scored 87 points. Montz has a busy half hour Saturday. After her fourth place finish in the triple jump she went straight to the check-in for the 300 hurdles.
"I wasn't really that tired," the junior said. "It helped me get warmed up for hurdles because that's really important. Everybody's always like 'warm up, warm up, warm up,' The coaches say the better you warm up and the more you're sweating the better you'll perform. So I think it helped me." Coming around the curve to the last 100 meters, two Montz's competitors clipped a hurdle and fell, but the Panthers' junior kept her composure. "One went down and then another went down," said Montz. "I just had to focus on my race and do what my coaches taught me to do." With the finish line in sight, Montz would not be denied. "Coming around the turn to the last hundred meters I knew once that girl got back up from falling she'd be coming for me," Montz said. "I just had to keep pumping my arms and do what my coaches taught me so I could finish strong." Immediately after the race, Montz wasn't sure how it feels to be a state champion. "I don't know," she said. "I'm still processing it. But I'm pretty excited right now." Montz' time of 48.68 seconds set a school record previously held by Sam Price. The Panthers' Autumn Estep, Jordan Dodson, Alysa Conway, and Taesha Andre claimed a state title and lowered their school record to 4:08.49 in the 4 x 400 relay.
