Perryville and North East both opened with a win the the Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division softball tournament being played in Havre de Grace. Perryville blanked Rising Sun 10-0 in six innings Wednesday afternoon. Winning pitcher Emily Phillips hurled a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. Perryville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Jordyn Pollitt led off with a walk. Melissa Savin beat out a bunt for a single. Pollitt raced to third on the play to narrowly beat the tag of Rising Sun's Kaylan Smith, who hustled in from left field.
After an out, Brooke Reynolds bunted and reached on a fielder's choice when Rising Sun looked Pollitt back to third. With two out, Kyleigh Knell ripped a two-run single to left on the first pitch of the at bat. Phillips followed with a two-run bloop single behind the first base bag. In the fourth, Phillips led off with a triple and scored on an error on a ball hit by Carly White. Pollitt added a two-run single and Savin plated a run with a groundout to make it 8-0. Knell, Phillips, Savin, and Reynolds each collected a pair of hits. Rising Sun's lone hit came on a bunt by Courtney Spangler in the sixth inning. In the first game of the tournament on Tuesday, North East d\downed Elkton 12-1 in six innings. Winning pitcher Aleshia Shires tossed a one-hitter with four strikeouts. Shires also doubled, drove in two runs, and scored three times. Gaylen Lane had a single and an RBI and Brooke Fortune, Kaitlyn Stewart, and Olivia Martin each added a hit. North East broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth inning. Lexie Barclay had Elkton's lone hit and Maggie Biddle walked and scored in the first inning. Comments are closed.
