Bel Air scored the first 14 points of the third quarter to snap a halftime tie on the way to a 65-40 triumph over the Rising Sun boys basketball team Tuesday night. The loss snapped the Tigers' two-game win streak. Rising Sun led by as many as five points in the second quarter before the Bobcats rallied to tie it at 22 entering the break. Things went downhill rapidly in the third. Brandon Aro picked up his third foul 40 seconds into the half and Jesse Shields was whistled for his third foul a minute later.
The Tigers were unable to handle Bel Air's pressure defense in that crucial stretch, causing coach Matt Haack to lambaste his team during two timeouts. "We played such a good first half," Haack said. "We played a great first half and it wasn't like Bel Air played a dud. We were playing well. We had good defense out there. We were being smart with the ball on offense. We weren't folding under some of the pressure they threw our way. And then in the second half they open with two quick buckets and we tucked our tails and it looked like we quit early. And that frustrated me because I knew we could play with these guys and try to make it a game for 32 minutes." Bel Air led 47-32 at the end of the third quarter before starting the fourth with a 13-1 spurt to break it wide open. Aro paced Rising Sun with 11 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Spencer McDermott added seven points, four rebounds, and two steals. Kevin Alkingburg collected four points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. The Tigers were coming off wins over Bohemia Manor and Harford Christian and that momentum carried over into the first half. "Our intensity was up," said Haack. "We did a good job with the zone to try to get a hand in the face of their shooters. And we were aggressive inside, not giving up any easy looks near the rim." Comments are closed.
