Chesapeake City and Elkton prevailed on the first night of the Little League Maryland District 5 9-10 baseball tournament Monday in Rising Sun. Chesapeake City downed Perryville 14-3 in five innings in the opening game of the tournament. Leading 5-3 heading into the top of the fifth, Chesapeake City tallied nine times to end the game. It all started innocently enough as Lance Fehlman led off with a walk and eventually scored on an error. Brett Cochran made it 8-3 with a two-run triple to left-center. Grant Mackie golfed a two-run double to right-center, Robbie Burns delivered an RBI single, and Jake Koehler's two-run single ended the game.
Chesapeake City had jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Starting pitcher Charlie Mason lashed an RBI triple and scored on an error in the bottom of the first. Cole DeVary walked and scored in the second. In the third, Trent Wilson plated a run with a groundout and another run scored on a wild pitch. Perryville got back into the game with three runs in the fourth. Luke Marcinkevich walked and Brandon Meinhaldt singled to center. Angel Ocampo walked to load the bases. After two outs, Eric Lee smacked a two-run single. Nathan Rice was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Angelo Stanley walked to force home a run. Elkton defeated North East 11-1 in four innings in the nightcap. Gannon Williams and John Cherwaty combined to allow one hit and struck out nine. Adam Pressler hit an inside-the-park homer in the third and and added a triple and a single and scored three runs. Kaiden Mellott collected three hits and scored three runs. Cherwaty had three hits. Josh Warren singled twice and scored a pair of runs. Kyle Polaski had two hits and Ryan Layton singled and scored. For North East, Dresden Knaub had his team's only hit in the fourth and scored the lone run. In Tuesday's games, Chesapeake City will face Havre de Grace at 5:30 followed by Elkton vs. Rising Sun.
