The Perryville softball team is primed for a run at a third straight region title. "The potential is there," coach Rusty Moore said. "It's all going to depend on the hitting and filling a few spots. We have a younger team than we're accustomed to having but we have the opportunity and skills to get back there." The Panthers once again have pitching depth. Katelyn Willis, a key member of the two title teams, returns. She is also capable of playing second base or third base when not in the circle. Sophomore Lydia Hill and freshman Emily Phillips will each get a chance to pitch, Moore said. Four-year starter Molly Staly returns behind the plate and brings a power bat to the middle of the batting order.
Hill will play first base when she's not pitching. Junior Krystle Schweers will take over at second base for Bethany Rinehart. Perryville will get a big boost with the return of shortstop Brooke Wills. Wills broke her leg in the 13th game and missed the rest of the season. She was hitting around .600 at the time of her injury. "Brooke is one of the most dangerous hitters in the entire UCBAC," Moore said. Freshmen Erin Murphy and Ashley Meekins are slated to platoon at third base. Sophomore Jules Jones is also capable of playing there but is expected to be the starter in left field. Emily Baker returns in right field. Phillips and sophomore Kyleigh Knell are in the centerfield mix. Freshman Nikki Hill, a transfer to the area who has shown a strong bat, and freshman Sarah Chandler will give Moore options off the bench. Comments are closed.
