NEW-LOOK PERRYVILLE BOYS EYE SIMILAR RESULTS The Perryville boys soccer team won't look the same but is hoping to produce similar results. While the Panthers did lose the three players who accounted for the bulk of the scoring last year, Perryville returns a long list of talented players. "It's quite a different look," coach George Reynolds said. "We have a good nucleus and a lot of young players. We're going to need them to step into different roles than they had last year. It's going to take a little while." The Panthers will once again field a solid defense. Goalie Dustin Krahn is coming an an outstanding season.
Senior Jake Hudson will be a linchpin as either a defender or midfielder. Cameron Burns will play a key role once he returns from injury. Connor Bowman (back/midfielder), Alex Shires (midfielder), Joey Carter (defender), Dillon Drouilliard (forward/midfielder) and Ryan Norris (forward/midfielder) bring talent and experience. Defender Tanner Bird has some varsity experience. Sophomores Ben Douty (defender), midfielder Gunther Prevost (midfielder), and Chris Hawley (forward) will also contribute. Freshman midfielder/defender Nick Roberts is also expected to help. It will not be an easy road for the Panthers, who will be playing in the Chesapeake Division after capturing the Susquehanna title last fall and advancing to the region title game. "I'm hoping in the end we'll be competitive with the tougher teams," Reynolds said. "It's going to take a lot of adjustments on everybody's part." RISING SUN HAS DEPTH TO REBUILD The Rising Sun boys soccer team returns just one starter, but has a lot of solid players ready to step in and contribute. Captain Adam Parker played every minute of every game last season. He will play center back and anchor the defense in front of goalie Danny Hanzelka. Hanzelka has been the backup to Josh McKinney the last few years and is more than capable, coach Ken Ulrich says. Ulrich likened the situation to the San Francisco 49ers when Steve Young was a backup to Joe Montana. "I have every confidence that he's going to be as good as any goalie in the county," Ulrich said. Sophomore center midfielder Logan Holtman will make an impact. Holtman made the varsity team last year but suffered a season-ending injury. "He's been looking good," said Ulrich. "He's unselfish and a very strong player." Underclassmen Michael Catena and Kane Watson will also chip in. Junior Cody Thomas, very impressive as a freshman, suffered a serious knee injury for the second straight year and is lost for the season. Another player elected to focus on club ball. The Tigers have 10 seniors – Parker, Hanzelka, striker Johnny Bragg, striker Luke Timcik, midfielder Nick Holtman, midfielder Ethan Chappell, midfielder Kyler Reisler, back/striker Jamie Butler, Quinton Waddell, and Caleb Ulrich. Ken Ulrich says depth will be the team's strength "When we substitute you shouldn't see too much of a let-up," he said. "We can rotate players and the level of play will stay the same." Ulrich expects a higher quality of play in the county this season. He says the Tigers' goal is to capture the Susquehanna Division title and move back up to the Chesapeake Division.
