It wasn't shocking that Cambridge-South Dorchester defeated the visiting Perryville football team in the region title game Friday night. But the way it happened was. Perryville failed on a fake punt and came up short on another fourth down try near midfield in the first half. Cambridge took over on their own 49 following the fake punt. An 18-yard screen pass from Brian Lindsay to Terry Wilson took the ball to the one and Lindsay scored on the next play to put Cambridge up 7-0 with 9:43 left in the second quarter. The Panthers then turned the ball over on downs at its own 45 on the ensuing possession. Elijah Johnson intercepted a pass but the Vikings got the ball back four plays later on an INT.
Facing a 4th and one from the Perryville 12, Lindsay gained eight yards on a bootleg. James Smith scored on the next play to make it 14-0 with 3:19 to go in the half. The Panthers' offense finally got going. Short passes to Tyrell Hollingsworth and Johnson moved the ball into Cambridge territory and then Eathen Griffin got loose for a 35-yard scamper down the the Vikings' 13 with less than a minute to go. Perryville allowed valuable time to slip away before quarterback Cam Cunningham was sacked at the 15 with 13 seconds remaining. On third and 13, Cunningham couldn't connect with Antony Smith across the middle so the Panthers were forced to settle for a 32-yard field goal try which was wide left. The second half was more of the same. Perryville kicked off out of bounds to give Cambridge good field position and they eventually lengthened their lead to 21-0 on a 26-yard run by MarkQuon Bosley. After another interception by Shai Comegys, Cambridge had a 4th and 23 from the Perryville 33-yard line. Then came the dagger. Comegys made a leaping grab of a Lindsay pass at the one and the senior QB scored on the next play. That gave the hosts a 28-0 lead with 5:24 left in the third quarter. Game over. Cambridge converted another interception into a touchdown with four seconds left in the third quarter to enact the mercy rule and the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. The two times met in the region title game for the third straight season. Perryville, which finishes the year with a record of 7-5, had won the two previous meetings at home.
