The Perryville girls lacrosse team expects to continue establishing itself as a premier program. Last season, the Panthers recorded one more win than the previous season and advanced one round further in the region tournament. Perryville went 12-3 and lost to Queen Anne's in the region final. Replicating that season will not be easy as the Panthers lost nine contributors to graduation, but a strong nucleus returns.
"We have a different team, a younger team," coach Mary Dunman said. "I see us having a positive year. We want to build on our success so the program will continue to grow." On offense, the "dynamic duo" of junior Taylor Poore, who surpassed the 40-goal mark last year, and sophomore Sydnie Bjork (more than 70 goals) provide the Panthers with firepower. Dunman calls Poore a "triple threat" because she is a factor on defense, the midfield, and attack. While offense garners many of the headlines, Perryville also has a host of talented midfielders and defenders. The midfield returns intact led by Merve Akbay, Gabby Frederick, Didem Akbay, and Makenzie Pollak. Three of the top four defenders are back. Dunman has a great deal of confidence in Ally Remesch, Alex McCann and Laura Ricketts. The defense will play in front of goalie Cali Tyson, who is up from JV. The Panthers are striving to get their program on a level where they can compete with the strong Harford County teams. Dunman said she is grateful for a Cecil County Parks and Recreation program which is run by Bob Jones in January and February. "That has helped the entire county raise its level of play," she said.
