Perryville's girls lacrosse team led early and came out on top to post a win in play-off action last week. The Panthers captured a 20-9 victory over visiting Elkton last Wednesday, May 10. Perryville head coach Mary Dunman said "We came out to play our game. We always have a very aggressive game against each other. It always comes down to the two of us and they (Elkton) came to try and beat (us) and (we) played a great game. We just stuck to our normal game plan and our defense held them (Elkton) and our transitions is what really kept us going this time." The Panthers notched the lead early on, scoring the first three goals. Elkton was able to bring them within a point of Perryville (3-2) with goals from Erin DePaul and Sevelle Brown. "Practice, we have been working really hard and have been really stressing the regional game. We have made it there every year and we just haven't won it and we want to make it to regionals and win it (this year)," said Perryville goalie Abbie Jones. "We are just (like) a family and we encourage each other, we are very supportive of each other." Perryville's Jordan Carr fired in four goals to bring the panthers ahead of the Elks. Elkton's DePaul added a goal to try and trim the deficit but the Panthers scored four additional goals to end the first period. "Perryville obviously is a tremendous team, they have a lot of year round players and their chemistry is all just so good. So we knew coming into it (the game) that we would have to play our best game times 10. Our motto for it was if everyone is playing their 100 percent best or play with the most intensity that they could, that even if we lost, we knew we played the best game we could and that happened today," said Elkton captain Erin DePaul. The Elks tried to make a comeback in the second period with goals from Depaul, Anna Wolf, Maddie Rzucidlo, Brown, and Kristina Keithley. Perryville answered with nine additional goals to end the game. "I wanted everybody to walk off this field, knowing they played their absolute hardest and that they could be proud of what they did on the field and they all can (feel that way)," said Elkton head coach Kelly Zimmerman. Perryville's Carr collected nine goals. Bea Muscella scored five goals and Sydnie Bjork supplied 13 assists and added two goals. Jones nabbed six saves between the poles. For the Elks, Brown scored two goals and DePaul collected four. Esperanza Acevedo had an assist. Comments are closed.
