It's been an eventful week for Katie Keyes. On Wednesday, Keyes gave birth to her third child, a daughter. Today, Keyes was named head field hockey coach at her alma mater – Rising Sun High School. "I'm very excited, Keyes said Friday afternoon. "It's something I've looked forward to happening since I was in high school."
Keyes (neé Madron), a 2003 graduate of Rising Sun High, helped the Tigers win a state title in 2002. "I think knowing the tradition of the program is my biggest motivation," she said. "My experience playing at Rising Sun was so positive with my teammates and coaches and the success we had." She went on to become a four-year starter at Washington College. An eighth grade social studies teacher at Cherry Hill Middle School, Keyes served as an assistant field hockey at Elkton for a year. After taking a year off she was the Elks' head coach for a season. Keyes was a Rising Sun assistant for two seasons under former teammate Julie Eller. Another one of Keyes' former Tiger teammates, Julie Owens (neé Moore), will be an assistant coach. Owens played Division I field hockey at UMBC. "I'm even more excited to have my best friend as my assistant coach," Keyes said. "It's something we've always talked about." The Tigers have struggled in recent seasons. Keyes says the program must go back to basics. "We have to make sure the fundamentals are good," she said. "I think being in the lower division will allow us the time to focus on that. We need to be students of the game. For me, that's the biggest thing the next couple of years." Comments are closed.
