For Perryville football star Gabe Sherrod will use his final season of college eligibility in the Big 10 conference at one of the nation's premier programs. Sherrod has committed to Michigan State University where he will play for highly-respected coach Mark Dantonio. Last season, Michigan State won the Big 10 championship and was one of four teams selected to participate in the College Football Playoff. The Spartans lost to eventual champion Alabama in the national semifinals. As a quarterback at Perryville, Sherrod led the Panthers to the 2011 state title game. After graduating from Perryville in 2012, Sherrod played at Delaware State University, beginning his career as a wide receiver and ending it as one of the most-feared pass rushers in the Football Championship Series. Last fall, he recorded 64 tackles including 25 for loss and eight sacks. NCAA rules allow student-athletes who have graduated to transfer to another Division I school without having to sit out a season. Sherrod elected to leave Delaware State to pursue an opportunity at a FBS school and better his chances of fulfilling his dream of playing in the NFL. Sherrod initially planned to attend Syracuse University. "Jameis Winston used to say, 'If you gonna do it, do it big then'," Sherrod said via text Tuesday afternoon. "This was an opportunity I just couldn't pass on, the opportunity to play in some of the best college rivalries of today. I'm humbled and blessed for this opportunity to be pressed upon me. Syracuse would have been great and I am still honored that they offered me a scholarship, but the more and more I had time to think about it, the bright lights of Michigan State was what I wanted in my heart. I'm ready for it." Comments are closed.
