Rising Sun baseball coach Clyde Van Dyke thinks it would be a mistake for people to overlook his young Tiger team. Eight starters, including two top pitchers, graduated from last year's squad which finished 16-3. "I'm looking for this team to overachieve," the coach said. "That's our expectation. We might not have what we had last year but I think these guys are capable of overachieving. They have a good work ethic. They listen. And they want to win."
Rising Sun has a bonafide ace pitcher in senior righty Cole Benjamin. Senior Christian Pauley, a transfer from Havre de Grace, is expected to be part of the starting rotation. Jake Keane, Noah Juergens, Casey Baker, and lefty Tyler Snyder are slated to see time on the mound. Keane, Derek Schoff and Aaron Richardson, each up from the JV, are competing for action at catcher. "They have each shown improvement," Van Dyke said. "I feel confident in the guys behind the dish." Benjamin could play first base when he's not pitching. Keane, Jack Stewart and Derek Adams could also play there. Frankie Pyle, up from JV, is expected to be the starting second baseman and bat second. Zach Van Dyke, who played second base last year, moves over to shortstop to replace Adam Janney, the team's MVP last spring. "Zach's glove has improved two-fold over where it was last year," the coach said of his son. "With Frankie and Zach I think we're going to be pretty good up the middle." Keane and Jake Bower, who saw varsity action last season, will see time at third base. Baker will serve as a utility infielder. The outfield is wide open. If healthy, Brennan Martz will be in centerfield. Richardson, Juergens, Dakota Hodgson, Alex Billings, who played lacrosse last spring, are part of the mix in the outfield. "The guys who are hitting the baseball are the guys who we're going to find spots for," Clyde Van Dyke said. "It's as simple as that. We've got to score runs." Comments are closed.
