Rising Sun wrestling battled to a 42-37 victory over visiting Perryville on Wednesday, January 25. "We had high expectations coming in and then we had a couple of injuries and a couple of guys go down. We only have one of our three senior captains healthy. So its kind of put a dim on our season when it comes to dual meets. So this is one that we had circled as a winnable one that would mean a lot to the kids. Our guys went out there and wrestled hard," said Perryville head coach Thad Gough. The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference basketball All-Stars games will be played Saturday, March 19 at APGFCU Arena at Harford Community College.
Defense wins championships.
Perryville's Zac Zacerous proved that adage Saturday night as he captured the 1A/2A state title in the 170-pound weight class. Although that axiom is typically applied to other sports, Zacerous (35-3) used it to claim state gold at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. The Perryville girls basketball team had been pointing to this game for a year.
Despite a few shaky moments late, the Panthers were determined to make sure it did not slip away. Perryville exacted a measure of revenge for a playoff loss to Bohemia Manor last winter by ousting the Eagles 46-42 Tuesday night, March 1. Danger lurked as the Rising Sun boys basketball team played its postseason opener Monday night.
Darius Dangerfield of Harford Tech to be precise. The diminutive Dangerfield scored 13 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Cobras ousted the Tigers 74-62. Perryville's Zac Zacerous had a sensational sophomore season last year, placing second in both the UCBAC and region tournaments and sixth at the state meet.
Balanced scoring beat a two-pronged attack as the Perryville boys basketball team topped visiting Bohemia Manor 58-48 in a first-round playoff game Friday night.
Perryville sophomore Cage Jones captured the boys pole vault title at the MPSSAA Class 1A/2A indoor track and field meet Monday, February 22, at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.
Jones won with a height of 11 feet. "Since I'm only a 10th grader, it's an awesome feeling to win a state title," Jones said. "Coach Weiss (Raissa Moore) moved me to a longer pole so that I could vault higher. My confidence increased. I knew I had a shot at winning the title, especially when I didn't hit a single bar until after I had won. My next goal is to get to 12 feet and higher." The Perryville boys basketball team hung tough with a powerful Joppatowne squad for three quarters before the Mariners pulled away for a 57-39 triumph Monday night, February 22.
