The Tuesday, November 20, event held in the stadium generated funds for the school's Student Council, advisor Samantha Heil said. The Student Council uses the money to adopt a family for Christmas and buy breakfast for donors at the annual blood drive held in the spring. "Those are the big things," Heil said. Williamsport walloped the Tigers 26-24, 25-13, 29-9 in a state semifinal game at Ritchie Coliseum Tuesday night, November 13. Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird showed off his sprinting skills when it mattered most.
Laird overtook Boonsboro's Henry Schmidt with about 150 yards left in Saturday's MPSSAA cross country meet at Hereford High to capture his second consecutive state title. The Rising Sun volleyball team swept visiting Elkton in a region semifinal match Wednesday night, November 7.
The Tigers triumphed 25-7, 25-14, 25-15. The Rising Sun football team closed out a turnaround season with a 28-7 triumph over host North East in the rain Friday night.
Rising Sun's longshot playoff hopes had been dashed the night before when Parkside walloped Washington, but the focused Tigers still took care of business. Susquehanna Division champion Rising Sun finishes the season 7-3 after winning just one game last year. "It's been a fantastic season," Rising Sun coach Clem Vaughan said. "I couldn't be more proud of these guys, the way they worked in the offseason and came after it. They were receptive to change and came in after it." Seventy-eight seconds away from a season-ending defeat to rival North East, the Rising Sun girls soccer team tied it on an Abigail Backert goal before prevailing in a penalty shootout 1-1, (3-1 penalties) Tuesday, October 30, at Calvert Regional Park. Rosa Reid, Raigan McLoughlin, and Katelyn Willis each converted a penalty kick and goalie Kira Watson made two saves in the shootout. Rising Sun football players didn't view their 13-12 triumph over Harford Tech as a major upset.
Perhaps that's why the host Tigers managed to pull it off on a soggy Saturday afternoon. Although many outsiders expected the previously undefeated Cobras would prevail, one group in particular thought otherwise. "It's amazing," Rising Sun senior Dustin Flowers said. "You couldn't have written it up any better than this. No one expected us to do this. Not one person. We just believed in ourselves and we came out here and did it." |
