Rising Sun's Kendra Stamper poured in 25 points against her former school as the Tigers opened the girls basketball season with a 46-26 triumph over visiting Tome Thursday night, December 6. Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt was pleased by her team's debut. "We're athletic so we were able to get up and down the floor," she said. "I like the way we were able to do that. Our shooting was off a little but we were converting steals into layups and points. I knew that's a strength of ours. Overall, I was really happy with the way we played."
Stamper also collected seven steals, six rebounds, and three assists. She gives credit for her to success to Stoudt. "Stoudt does a really good job of keeping us as a team," Stamper said. "She encourages us. We should never be down on each other. I think that really helps us. Her coaching is probably the best thing. She keeps us motivated. She keeps me motivated. It's tough sometimes, but she makes us feel good. She boosts our confidence and I appreciate that most of all. These girls are really good girls and I'm happy to play with them and I'm proud to play with them. I don't think I'd rather play anywhere else my senior year. I'm super-excited." In addition to Stamper's big night, Rising Sun showed signs of having several other players capable of sharing the scoring load. Katie Willis contributed nine points, 15 rebounds, and three steals. Gabrielle Vaughan recorded six points, five rebounds, and four blocks, and Bella Barbato grabbed 11 rebounds. "Katie Willis is rebounding and put it back up really strong underneath," said Stoudt. "I see her scoring a lot this year. Bella (Barbato) is capable of putting points together. Gabrielle (Vaughan) had six [points]. Overall, we're able to spread our offense out pretty well." Abby Hershner had 16 of Tome's 26 points. Rising Sun led 10-2 early in the second quarter before Hershner scored consecutive buckets. Stamper responded with seven straight points to break the game open. The Tigers had a 22-8 edge at halftime. "We've got a lot of new players," said Stamper. "The seniors didn't play this year, but we had a lot of JV players come up and they're really aggressive. They're all athletes. I'm excited for the rest of the year." The win had special meaning for Stamper, who played at Tome before transferring to Rising Sun prior to last season. "It means a lot to me to beat them," said Stamper. "We both want to beat each other." Comments are closed.
