Special to The Herald Perryville girls basketball coach Amanda Wolfe had one word as to how her team prevailed late over county rival Rising Sun Monday, 47-45, Monday, February 12 - “intensity”. And indeed, intensity was the name of the game. Perryville already had suffered a disadvantage even before the game started - they only had six total players suit up, which left only one player on the bench at all times. “We had girls out of position [the whole game],” said Wolfe. Just call him Mr. Big Shot.
Perryville freshman Emarion Hampton has already developed a reputation as a clutch performer. Hampton's short runner banked off the glass and into the basket with six seconds remaining to lift the Panthers to a 43-41 triumph over host Rising Sun Friday afternoon. Instead of earning its first-ever banner to hang on the wall, the Perryville wrestling team had to watch Patterson Mill celebrate in the Panthers' gym.
The Huskies trailed 26-12 before winning four straight bouts to capture the region title with a 33-32 triumph over top-seeded Perryville. The North East boys basketball team went back to what had been working and enjoyed similar success.
The Indians built a big lead, saw Rising Sun cut it to four, and then pulled away again before holding on for a 73-67 triumph Tuesday night, February 6. The Perryville girls basketball team downed visiting Havre de Grace 35-25 Monday night, February 5.
It was an anticlimactic end to an exciting match.

It was a night of milestones for the Perryville wrestling team.
And the Panthers' star wrestler Hunter Zacerous was as happy about the team's big accomplishment as he was of his own. In Wednesday's 57-22 Senior Night triumph over North Harford, Zacerous posted his 100th career win with a pin in the opening bout as Perryville clinched the top seed and home mat advantage in the region dual tournament for the first time. |
