Rising Sun girls basketball coach Kathy Stoudt is seeking some answers after her team lost its first two games.
Harford Christian dominated the final three quarters and topped the Tigers 55-39 Tuesday night, December 15. It was a 'Titan-ic' comeback for the Perryville boys basketball team.
The Panthers scored the game's last 12 points capped off by a Bobby Monk basket with 4.7 seconds left to top Tome 41-39 Monday night, December 14. After a Titans' timeout, Perryville's Tyleke Johnson stole a pass at midcourt to seal the deal. There was no Christmas miracle in Rising Sun Friday night.
The Tigers boys basketball team trailed Bel Air by 19 points midway through the third quarter. Backed by a student section dressed in Santa hats and ugly sweaters who brought colorful lights and real pine trees, Rising Sun rallied to get within five but the Bobcats held on for a 49-43 triumph. The Perryville girls basketball team lost 41-15 to visiting Harford Tech Tuesday night, December 8.
The Cobras scored the game's first eight points before Jill Miller made a free throw with 2:06 left in the opening quarter. The Elkton boys basketball team outlasted Perryville 66-63 in triple overtime Monday night, December 7.
Elkton took a 64-62 lead with 1:23 left in the third extra session on a basket by Tazz Smith. The Panthers' Nick Roberts hit a free throw with 1:14 to play. Don Passenant expects to see improvement and some more wins in his second year as Rising Sun boys basketball coach.
The Tigers won just six games last season but several of those victories were significant. Rising Sun defeated rivals Elkton and Perryville and a solid Harford Tech squad and also posted a playoff win over North East. After losing its three leading scorers to graduation, the Perryville boys basketball team will require more teaching and coaching this season.
It's an opportunity coach Charles Givens Sr. relishes. "People think you just stand on the sideline directing the team," said Givens, who will be coaching the Panthers for the 40th season. "You do that but you also have to be able to teach." The Rising Sun girls basketball team once again expects to challenge for the Susquehanna Division title.
The Tigers were 16-4 last season and tied Harford Tech atop the division standings, but the Cobras won a tiebreaker. Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt knows it will not be easy. The Tigers lost five players to graduation including leading scorer Brooke Bower and unsung hero Courtney Spangler. |
