Lindsay Bennett has stepped down from her post as Rising Sun High School softball coach.
"My workload at the [Rising Sun] middle school is pretty heavy," Bennett said Thursday afternoon. "Teaching both science and social studies is double the work. It would've been very difficult to commit the time that the girls deserve." The Perryville field hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting C. Milton Wright Wednesday afternoon.
Carrie Brighthaupt tallied twice for the Panthers, including a goal 42 seconds into the game. But the defending league champion Mustangs scored four unanswered goals to take command. C. Milton Wright earned a berth in the UCBAC title game for the second straight season. Ty Franks of Bohemia Manor and Megan Tidey of North Harford won the individual races at the Chesapeake Division cross country meet held Tuesday, October 8 at North Harford.
C. Milton Wright captured both the boys and girls team titles. In the boys competition, the Mustangs (66) topped Perryville (71), North Harford (78), Fallston (90), Patterson Mill (109), Bel Air (110), and Bohemia Manor (113). Brianna Bailey scored the game-winner following a corner with 4:50 remaining in regulation. Mallory Tiffin picked up an assist. Maddie Hurm, making her second varsity start, recorded five saves to notch the shutout. Coach Julie Eller said Rachel Brown and Mary Clausius both had a strong game to help the outstanding defensive performance. Elijah Johnson scampered 22 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 40 seconds left and Tyrell Hollingsworth made a leaping interception in the end zone to seal the game with 16 ticks to go as Perryville posted a spellbinding 45-42 triumph over visiting Bel Air Friday night. The Bobcats had taken a 42-37 lead on a 46-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left. Perryville took over on its own 34 with 1:21 remaining. Johnson, filling in at quarterback for the injured Cam Cunningham, completed a 30-yard pass to Hollingsworth. The Rising Sun JV football team routed Bohemia Manor Thursday evening.
Jesse Herrera ran for 42 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Noah Juergens added 65 yards on the ground and rushed for a score. Nate McCullough threw for 61 yards. Wyatt Griffith made 14 tackles to lead the stout Tigers' defense. Curtis Cox, Jacob Gehron, and Mike Allen each made seven stops. Juergens and Tyler Jones each recorded an interception. The Rising Sun volleyball team remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory over host Elkton Wednesday night.
The Tigers triumphed 26-24, 25-12, 22-25, 25-9. Bailey Hook paced the Tigers with 17 kills and Lacey Swartout added 10. Anna Prodoehl produced four kills and Breanne Haley and Erika Dixon each had three. Swartout and Rachel Bowles each served six aces. Anna Caldwell collected 24 assists. Former Rising Sun wrestling coach Dean Cox received the prestigious Johnny K. Eareckson Award Sunday at the Maryland State Wrestling Association's banquet in Towson. Cox is the just the 26th person to receive the honor. According to the MSWA, "The Johnny K. Eareckson Memorial Award is presented annually by the Maryland State Wrestling Association to exceptional individuals who have demonstrated the qualities of inspiration and distinguished service to the Maryland wrestling community as exemplified by Johnny Eareckson. For 60 years, Eareckson stimulated the growth of wrestling in Baltimore, the east coast, and even in other countries. Visiting Bel Air downed the Perryville boys soccer team 4-0 Tuesday afternoon.
