Alden ‘Jake’ Kunsman of Elkton died at home Monday, January 6, 2014. He was 80. Born in Cecilton on February 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Alden Peter and the late Beulah (Snyder) Kunsman. Mr. Kunsman served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired meat cutter, having worked at Acme, his own store, Jake’s Market in North East, Shallcross, Value Food and Food Lion. Silvia Nerska of Rising Sun formerly of Seneca Falls, N.Y. and Clearwater, Fla., died at home January 6, 2014. She was 94. She was born on May 30, 1919 in Rakvere, Estonia. She was a bookkeeper but her life’s work was as a homemaker and mother. She was an avid gardener and was known for her beautiful flowers and canned much of the produce she grew. She was also a talented seamstress and was also a devout Christian. Gladys Cole Farmer of Rising Sun died Friday, January 3, 2014 in the Sharp Grossmont Hospital, La Mesa, Cal. She was 83. Born in Independence, Va., on June 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Len A. and the late Matilda Mae (Walker) Cole. For 25 years, Mrs. Farmer was a cook at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center. Helen “Teresa” Bittner died January 6, 2014. She was 90. She was the 11th child of 11 children born to Mary (Duke) and Frank T. Bittner of Port Deposit and their only child born at the relatively new Harford Memorial Hospital on November 6, 1923. Ms. Bitner graduated from Jacob Tome Institute in 1940 and from Beecom Business School in 1941. he began her career that year at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a clerk typist and later served as secretary to the APG/EA Exchange Services General Manager, retiring in 1977 after 36 years of service to the federal government. Richard N. Shumway of North East died Friday, January 3, 2014 at Northwest Hospital, Baltimore. He was 94.
He was born on May 3, 1919, the son of the late John G. and Letha (Nye) Shumway. Mr. Sumway served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he met and married his lifelong partner, W. Ann (Russell) Shumway on Feb. 12, 1946. Nioka Nicole Watts of Elkton died suddenly Sunday, January 5, 2014. She was 34. She was born in Elkton on October 5, 1979. She had worked as a waitress at several area restaurants. She enjoyed playing softball and volleyball. She is survived by her children, Kelsi, Gavin and Paulina Watts, and A.J. Smith; her mother, Virginia Smith of North East; her father, Anthony Hodenfield of Bel Air; a brother, Eric Smith and his wife Karen of Elkton, and a sister, Catherine Hodenfield of Missouri. Lillian Pauline Tester of North East died Monday, January 6, 2014 in the Heartland Hospice House, Wilmington, Del. She was 73. Born in Elkton on April 6, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and the late Mary (Alexander) McMullen. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Tester was a secretary at the Flying J Truck Stop and R.C. Burkheimer Auction both in North East. Mary Louise Miller of North East died Sunday, January 5, 2014 in Union Hospital, Elkton. She was 79. A lifelong resident of North East, she was born on September 29, 1934, the daughter of the late Daniel Leon and the late Mammie (Dennison) Ewing. Mrs. Miller was a graduate of North East High School. Etta Belle Gebhardt of Perryville died Sunday, January 5, 2014. She was 83.
Born in Illinois on December 13, 1930, she was the daughter of the late George William and the late Bertha (Williams Ward) Marble. James Albert Page, of Perryville, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home. He was 81. Mr. Page was born in Perryville on December 6, 1932, son of the late James K. and Lois Mae Hasson Page. He was a graduate of Perryville High School and served as a Corporal in the United States Army in Kaiserslaitern, Germany as a Disciplinary Guard from 1953 until 1955. He retired in 1988 from the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a carpenter. |
