Leon Cecil Alexander, Sr. of Elkton died Saturday, February 13, 2016 after a long illness. He was 57. Mr. Alexander earned an associate's degree from Cecil College. He then earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's of Education degree from Wilmington University. Mr. Alexander worked as a guidance counselor at Perryville Middle School for 13 years. Prior to that, he worked for DuPont Company for 23 years. Within the community, he served on the Cecil County Board of Education and was past president. He was also a member of Singerly Fire Company where he served as fire police for many years. He was a member and longtime secretary for the Cecil County Fireman's Association. Delilah Georgia Manning, 66 yrs, of Elkton, MD, died Saturday, February 13, 2016 in Franklin Square Hospital of Baltimore, MD. Born May 4, 1949 in Havre de Grace, MD, she was the daughter of Edith Corder Criss and the late Conard Criss.
Delilah was employed as a nursing assistant by the V.A. Maryland Health Care System of Perry Point, MD. She is survived by her son, Dale Gehman of Newark, DE; daughters, Lisa Frye of Elkton, MD, and Cheryl Poore of Conowingo, MD; five grandchildren; brothers, Timothy Cressman of Frederick, MD, and Mark Criss of Aberdeen, MD; sisters, Gloria Owens of North East, MD, Yolanda Racine of Havre de Grace, MD, and Becky Rambus of Abingdon, MD. Harry Moore “Skip” Heisler, Jr. of Newark, Del., died Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care, Newark. He was 64.
Born in Wilmington, Del., on December 21, 1951, he was the son of Harry Moore Heisler, Sr. and Esther (Cloud) Heisler. Mr. Heisler enjoyed cooking, fishing, crabbing, boating, the Ravens, University of Maryland sports and watching television. He was a lab tech for 42 years, employed by DuPont Company Experimental Station. Nelson Wayne Sutton, ‘Big Bear’ or ‘Chewy’, 59 of Rising Sun died at home Friday, February 12, 2016. He was 59. A lifelong resident of Cecil County, he was born in Elkton, on January 15, 1957, the son of the late Charles C. Sutton, Sr. and Sarah Jane (Armour) Sutton. Employed by Amtrak for 38 years, he worked as a welder foreman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, ping pong, softball, pool and was a member of Conowingo Baptist Church. Michael C. Weaver of Perryville died Friday, February 12, 2016 at the University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital of Havre de Grace. He was 74. Born January 17, 1942 in Perryville, he was the son of the late William E. and Doris M. Wettig Weaver. Mr. Weaver was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Perryville, the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and the American Rental Association. He was a CPA and the owner/operator of Bay Country Rental of Aberdeen. J. Ralph Sumpter of Port Deposit, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the V.A. Maryland Health Care System of Perry Point. He was 96. Born June 19, 1919 in Cecil County, he was the son of the late Kyle E. and Virginia Alice Mitchell Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 4th Armored Division, 12th Corp., 37th Tank Battalion having served May 1941 until October 1945. He was a member of the Susquehanna American Legion Post No. 135 of Perryville, and a member of the Jerry Skrivanek Post No. 8185 of Port Deposit. Mr. Sumpter was a retired mechanic for Aberdeen Proving Ground. Dorothy Iris Benjamin of Rising Sun died Wednesday, February 10, 2016. She was 89. She was born on September 25, 1926 in Floyd County, Va., daughter of the late Chester Houchins and Cathlean Houchins Sutphin and her late stepfather Custis Sutphin. She was the co-owner and operator of Benjamin’s Store in Rising Sun for over 60 years, to which she devoted her life, working and serving her customers and community. As a pastime, she enjoyed reading, watching game shows and spending time with her family. She is survived by her sons, H. Wayne Benjamin, and his wife, Norma, of Rising Sun, and Chester Benjamin, and his wife, Dorothy, of Conowingo; a brother, Wilmer Sutphin, and his wife, Toni, of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Pauline McKown, of Tappahannock, Va., and Peggy Boyd, and her husband, Scott, of Tampa, Fla; three grandchildren, Tracey Serpi and her husband Bill of Churchville, Richard Benjamin of Rising Sun, and Jennifer Benjamin of Conowingo. Katherine Virginia Diehl, 78, of Oxford, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove.
Born in Shamokin, PA she was the daughter of the late Russell, Sr. and Eleanor Kramer Williams. Katherine retired in 2010 from Superior Food Services, Woodlyn and formerly employed with Rob Ann Sports Wear, Chester as a seamstress. She enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia Eagles and was devoted to her grandchildren. Elliot Monroe “El Cid” Jones died Monday, February 1, 2016 in the Wilkes Barre General Hospital, Wilkes Barre, Pa. He was 33.
Born in Philadelphia on December 9, 1982, he was the son of the late Willie Earl McCray and the late Benita Jones. He worked in retail sales. Frances Mary Pierce, 88 of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Tuesday February 2, 2016 at Union Hospital surrounded by her family. Frances was born on November 2, 1927 in Harford County.
She was the beloved wife of John Pierce for 72 years. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Little. Frances worked at the Nottingham Canning Company in Nottingham PA, retiring in 1991 to care for her grandson. She was a lifelong member of Union United Methodist Church in Nottingham PA where she enjoyed the fellowship of her church family. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and listening to country and gospel music. But what Frances cherished most of all was her time spent with her loving family and grandson. |
