Dorothy June Searfino, 86 of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 in the Laurelwood Nursing Center, Elkton, MD. Born in Rowlesburg, WV, on September 2, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Moore. Alfred Scotten Meekins, 64 of Port Deposit, MD, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in the Senator Bob Hooper Hospice House, Forest Hill, MD. Born in North East, MD, on August 19, 1952, he was the son of the late John and Eleanor (Porter) Meekins. Mr. Meekins retired after 28 years of service as a firefighter, beginning at Bainbridge, then transferring to the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. After his retirement, he took a position as a State Police Dispatcher in Rockville, MD, retiring from that position also. He was a member of the North East Fire Company, was a ham radio operator and enjoyed the computer. Ruth Grace Savoie, 73 of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Monday, January 23, 2017.
Born in Lawrence, MA, on May 10, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Blanche (Sandborn) Petty and the youngest of eight children. Ruth was a homemaker who enjoyed fishing and playing Bingo. Juanita Eileen Shearer, 78 of Elkton, MD, passed away Monday, January 23, 2017 at home. Born in Baltimore, MD, on December 8, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Helen Bordner. She enjoyed dining out, decorating, watching football and was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. Most of all she loved her family especially her children. Martha Dale Graham passed on to her heavenly rest on January 22, 2017 at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, PA. Mrs. Graham was the daughter of the late Marvin C. and Nora B. Dale. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Alexander P. Graham Sr. She was born in Livingston, TN on November 8, 1925. She graduated from Livingston Academy and went on to business school. Following completion of her training in 1944, she and her best friend moved to Oak Ridge, TN and worked as a secretary on the Oak Ridge Project. At the completion of the project she was offered a position in Washington, D.C. In 1949 they left their small town roots and began work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She was very proud of her work at the FBI and honored to have worked for Mr. J. Edgar Hoover. She left the Bureau in 1964 and her focus turned to caring for her family. Known for her homemaking and entertaining skills Mrs. Graham was also very active in her children’s schools, church and community organizations. She was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD. She enjoyed spending time at the family’s beach home in Fenwick Island, DE, traveling, reading and spending time with friends and family. Mrs. Graham retired to Ocean Pines, MD. Upon her development of Alzheimer’s disease she moved to Cecil County, MD to be closer to her family. Clara Tome Spencer, of Perryville, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 in Calvert Manor Health Care Center of Rising Sun. She was 94.
Born February 10, 1922, in Port Deposit, she was the daughter of the late Samuel R., Sr. and Martha Brown Miller Tome. Mrs. Spencer was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church of Port Deposit. She was formerly employed by the Donaldson Brown Center also of Port Deposit. Mrs. Spencer is survived by her sons, Donald W. Spencer of North East, Michael D. Spencer of North East, Tracy Spencer Jr., of Elkton; daughters, Judy S. Dawson of Rising Sun, and Norma J. VanDyke of Elkton; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Albert J. Goad, 86 of Elkton, MD, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bluefield, VA, on June 22, 1930, he served his country during Korea in the US Army. Mr. Goad retired from General Motors. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North East. Albert Goad was a family man through and through. He was very proud of his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years: Emma Goad; his one and only daughter: Paula Johnson and his son-in-law and best friend: Ron Johnson; his two granddaughters: Chandis Joelle (Candy Jo) and Caitlyn Jean (Hi Cate); his one spunky great grandchild: Alexis Jade. He has many special nieces to include Geraldine, Libby, Marlene, Vera, Diane, Kathy and so many more, too many to mention, that he loved so much all equally. You see the reason the women are mentioned is because we were all his “Pretty, Pretty Princess” and Daddy loved us all. Jeddie Mae Le Goff (née Bristow), 84, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 21, at home. Mrs. Le Goff was born on Sept. 24, 1932, in Borger, Texas. She was the valedictorian of her senior class at Landon High School in Jacksonville, Fla. She worked as an administrative assistant at Squibb Corporation in New York City in the 1950s, where she also was a member of the Billy Graham Crusade. Mrs. Le Goff moved from New York to downtown Laurel in the summer of 1963, and later that fall to her home in Scaggsville, where she resided for 53 years, when her husband, Yves, started working at the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Laurel for five decades, and at various times worked in the church library, sang with the choir, and taught preschool and Sunday School at the First Baptist School. She also learned sign language and helped teach deaf children in the 1970s. Mrs. Le Goff went back to school and earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Maryland. After teaching, she worked as an administrative assistant at the American Pharmacists Association and in the audiology department at Gallaudet University, both in Washington, D.C., before retiring. She also enjoyed working numerous Saturdays for years at her daughter’s pharmacy, The Medicine Shoppe, in Elkton. Mrs. Le Goff served on the boards and committees of the Hammond Park Stingrays summer swim team, Central Maryland Swim League and Maryland Swimming in the 1970s-80s. Faye Combs, 82 of North East, MD, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 21, 2017. Born in Beckley, WV, on July 7, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oren Meador. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Combs was a teacher at Elkton Christian Academy for over 10 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of North East, MD. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years: Duane Combs; son: Steve Combs of Elkton, MD; daughter: Becky Horvs of Mechanicsville, VA; five siblings: Geraldine Crawford and Irene Smith both of Coal City, WV, Betty Dvorak of Elkton, MD, James Meador of Columbus, SC and Catherine Meador of Elkton, MD; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter and one great grandchild on the way.
