Albert M. "Abbie" Preston, age 87, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Cherry Hill, MD, on April 14, 1929, he was the son of the late William L. and Mary Potts Preston.
Mr. Preston retired as a mechanic for Baker Driveaway, Newark, DE. He was instrumental in starting the CDL Tractor-Trailer Driver Training Program at Cecil College, as well as an instructor of the program. He loved being with his family and was a life member of Singerly Fire Company, Elkton. Jean Loving McMillion, 90 of North East, MD, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017 at HeartHomes in Pasadena, MD.
Born in WV, on March 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick William Loving and Sophie Susan (Bowen) Loving. Mrs. McMillion began teaching at age 18, due to so many teachers being drafted during World War II. She taught grades 1-8 in a one room school. During this time she attended night school and attended classes every summer to complete her Bachelor’s degree. Later in life she returned to college in the evenings and eventually received a Masters Equivalency, for education in reading fundamentals. After 44 years of teaching she retired from Cecil County Public Schools. After retiring from education, she served as a missionary in Bolivia. She was a faithful member of Grace Bible Chapel, and was a devoted supporter of the church. She could be seen at Grace Bible Chapel most Sundays, singing hymns and sharing in fellowship. Edith E. Conrad, age 93, of North East, MD, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017. Born in Baltimore, MD, on February 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Wolff Woodall.
Mrs. Conrad retired as a seamstress from Nannette Manufacturing in Elkton, MD, after more than 20 years of service. She loved spending time with her family and was an avid fan of all Baltimore sports teams. Hazel Virginia Janney, age 70, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 11, 1947, in Conowingo, MD to the late Paul and Jane Mac Cauley Eldreth. She was a homemaker who babysat every one of her grandchildren. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She especially enjoyed baseball and was an avid fan of the Orioles. Her great granddaughter brought much enjoyment to her life and held a special place in her heart. Shirley E. Deppish of Rising Sun, MD passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the age of 73. She was born in Havre de Grace, MD to the late Harry and Margaret McGonigal. Shirley was a retired PCO Dispatcher for the police department. In her free time, she loved to be outside and enjoyed gardening. Shirley had a particular liking for football and NASCAR. She was an avid New England Patriots fan and liked Penn State at the college level. Shirley enjoyed following Terry Labonte during his NASCAR career. James B. Shepherd, Sr., 81, of Nottingham, PA, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford, PA. Born in Fair Hill, MD, he was the son of the late George Bryan and Lena Hackney Shepherd. He was the husband of Marilyn Passerini Shepherd with whom he shared 23 years of marriage. James was employed with Pinno Pontiac Buick, Oxford as a service manager and retired after over 50 years of service. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church, Rising Sun, MD. He was also a member of the NRA and former member of the Gideons. James enjoyed classic cars and hunting. He hunted 108 deer. Billie June Edwards, age 78, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017 of natural causes. Born on October 30, 1938 in Moody, TX, she was the daughter of the late Duke and Eva Mae (Denny) Cordell. Billie worked for many years as a waitress in both the York, PA and North East, MD areas. After much hard work, she opened Billie’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant in North East, MD, operating it for 20 years. She also owned the Susquehanna Inn in Conowingo, MD and B&D Trucking in Rising Sun, MD. Always a business woman, Billie took pride in making sure her customers were well fed. Billie enjoyed old western movies, western novels, gardening, and relaxing on the beach in Fenwick Island, DE. Mary Elizabeth Schiedel, 69 of Sparks, MD, formerly of North East, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Shock Trauma, Baltimore, MD. Born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 23, 1947, she was the daughter of the late James Nelson and Jane Sterner Cameron. Mrs. Schiedel was President of Globetech International Ltd, Sparks, MD. She enjoyed cooking, painting, sewing, reading and was an accomplished writer. Quite the history buff, military history was especially intriguing to her. Evelyn Venessa Nines, 97 of Elkton, MD, died Friday, March 24, 2017 at home.
Born in Cumberland, MD, on December 13, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Pearl (White) Whitacre. She was the wife of the late John Nines. Mrs. Nines retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground where she worked for many years as a seamstress. A lifetime member of Aberdeen VFW Post 17 Ladies Aux., Mrs. Nines, along with her husband were also the founders of VFW Post 10146 Darlington/Dublin. Sylvia H. (Lewis) Smith, 98 of North East, MD, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017.
Born in Lebanon, PA, on October 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Hess) Lewis. She was the wife of the late Melvin A. “Dutch” Smith who died Nov. 22, 1996. Mrs. Smith worked side by side with her husband on their family farm. She was a member of the Eastern Star, having served as a past Matron, a member of Shelemiah UM Church in Bayview and the Women’s Club of Cecil County. |
