William E. Buffington, 74, of Quarryville passed away on February 23, 2017 at home, surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer. He was born in Kirkwood to the late Joseph and Alice (Brown) Buffington. He had been a truck driver for 56 years, having worked for Fast Track Express in Rising Sun, and J. Earl Keys Trucking in Nottingham. He was a member of the Professional Rodeo Association as well as several other horse clubs. Bill was especially fond of his horse, Skeeter and his cat, Tasha. Corrine Goodyear, 81 of Elkton, MD, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017 at home. Born in Castlewood, VA, on June 3, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Ollie (Sawyer) Marshall. Corrine was a member of Harvest Pentecostal Church, Bay View, MD. She enjoyed watching wrestling. She is survived by one son: Phillip Cline of Elkton, MD; two daughters: Tammy Rivera of North East, MD and Marlene Ariste of Elkton, MD; her twin sister: Lorraine Combs of North East, MD; 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. Kathy Ann Johnson, 64 of Elkton, MD, passed away Monday, February 27, 2017 at home. Born in Wayne County, MI, on February 24, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Quincy and Merle J. (Campbell) Hall. Over the years, Kathy worked as a waitress at area restaurants. She is survived by 3 daughters: Dorie L. Stewart (Ronald) of Elk Mills, MD, Jeannie M. Niebel (Robert) of Stuarts Draft, VA and Kathy A. Johnson (David LaCroix) of Woodstock, VA; her companion of 30 years: Boyd "Butch" Blizzard of Elkton, MD; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; her sister: Carolyn Craig; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Edward Fritz, 74 of Horntown, VA, formerly of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Welch, WV, on August 6, 1942, he was the son of the late Charles and Francis (Shoemaker) Fritz. Mr. Fritz retired from the MD State Highway Dept. after 28 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, boating, camping and just being outdoors. An avid reader of the Bible, he loved going to hymn sings. The thing he enjoyed most was his grandchildren. Bentford Coy Handy, of Elkin, North Carolina, formerly of Cecil County, MD, died on February 21, 2017. Ben was born on Nov. 30, 1944, in Hayes, NC, to the late Coy Handy and Lula Handy. He was employed at Elk Mills Stone Quarry, Elkton, MD and Lowes of Elkin, NC. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons: Ben Handy and his wife, Lori, of Elkton, MD, Brian K. Handy and his wife, Patty of Elkton; as well as three grandsons: Morgan, Joshua and Brian Handy Jr.; three granddaughters: Briana, Adrean, and Amber Handy; three great grandchildren: Addison, Brady and Natalie Handy. Ruth “Kay” Howell of Rising Sun, MD, daughter of the late Ralph M. Reed and Ruth Reburn Reed passed away peacefully at her home with her family Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Kay was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She loved the Lord. She was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher for many years. Her interests included family, gardening, poetry, and baking. She was an avid card sender to shut-ins and American soldiers and faithfully donated blood to the local blood bank. For many years, she was a caregiver and she will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest passion was helping others. Henry Earl Harvey, Jr. a lifetime resident of North East, MD, was born on November 18, 1945 and died on January 8, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents and raised from the age of 3 by his aunt and uncle, the late George and Eleanor Harvey. He is also preceded in death by his aunt and uncle, Bob and Eloise Harvey and cousin, Mary Elizabeth Harvey Conklin. Surviving family members are Barbara Harvey of Phoenix, AZ, George Harvey and wife Rebekah of Sanford, NC, Claudia Harvey Peters and husband Alan of Chadds Ford, PA; second cousins, Amy, Cara, Reed, Grant, Meg; and special cousins, Carolyn Jean King and Bonnie King Delong. Nellie B. Crothers of Conowingo, MD, age 80, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 21, 2017. She was born in Colora, MD to the late Joseph McCoy and Julia (McGlothlin) McCoy. Everyone in the neighborhood knew her as “Miss Nellie” having driven School Bus #57 for 31 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her gardening and having the grandchildren over in the summer to swim in the pool. Vernie "Cecil" Hagey, 87 of Elkton, MD, passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 in the Heartland Hospice House, Wilmington, DE.
Born in Pocahontas, VA, on August 5, 1929, he was the son of the late Ciebert C. and Rebecca May (Bennett) Hagey. Mr. Hagey served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Chrysler after 30 years of service as a forklift operator. Prior to working for Chrysler he was a coal miner for 10 years. Edna Dulaney Smith, 92 of Aberdeen, MD, passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, MD.
A lifelong resident of Harford County, she was born in Perryman, on January 3, 1925, the daughter of the late George Alexander Bowen and the late Mildred Elizabeth (Waream) Bowen. Mrs. Smith was an active member of Wesleyan Chapel UM Church, Aberdeen, MD. In addition to her devotion to her church, she enjoyed bowling, stock car racing and loved feeding her squirrels and birds. |
