J. Ralph Sumpter of Port Deposit, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the V.A. Maryland Health Care System of Perry Point. He was 96. Born June 19, 1919 in Cecil County, he was the son of the late Kyle E. and Virginia Alice Mitchell Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 4th Armored Division, 12th Corp., 37th Tank Battalion having served May 1941 until October 1945. He was a member of the Susquehanna American Legion Post No. 135 of Perryville, and a member of the Jerry Skrivanek Post No. 8185 of Port Deposit. Mr. Sumpter was a retired mechanic for Aberdeen Proving Ground. He is survived by his sons, William L. Sumpter, Gary Sumpter, Phillip Sumpter, Joseph Sumpter; son-in-law, Scott Wilson; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Morrison Sumpter; daughter, Judy Wilson; brothers, Oakley A. Sumpter, Sr., William L. Sumpter, Thomas E. Sumpter; and sister, Mildred V. Taylor/Queen. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, February 19, noon, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, February 19, 10 a.m.-noon, at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. Pastor Michael A. Caldwell of Asbury United Methodist Church of Port Deposit will officiate. Burial will be in West Nottingham Cemetery, Colora.
