John Dallas Van Dyke, of Selbyville, Delaware, passed away May 21, 2016. Born in Des Moines, Iowa on January 23, 1933 to Guy Quinton and Harriett Van Dyke, John is survived by his wife Andree Van Dyke of Elkton, Maryland and children; Christine (Russell) Miller of Rising Sun, Maryland, Geraldine (Robert) Long of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, Albert Vandyke, of Charlestown, Maryland, and Steve (Kimberly) Van Dyke of Milford, Delaware, and his sister, Dora Kay Hanson of Boone, Iowa, grandsons Shawn (Wendy) Miller, Shane (Tara) Miller, Robert (Melissa) Long III, Michael (Megan) Long, Kyle Van Dyke, and his great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grand-daughter Dawn Long Hill, and daughter-in-law Carolyn Baughman. John served his country in the US Army at several locations during his career, from 1953 until retirement in 1974. Among them, he served in France, where he met Andree and was married. He served two tours in Vietnam receiving numerous commendations, including a Purple Heart. After retirement from the US Army, he was a machinist and fabrication instructor for many years at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. John enjoyed Scouting and was an active leader with his sons and grandsons for many years. John supported the Anatomy Gift Registry and the family will schedule and announce services in July for John’s internment at Delaware Veterans Memorial Park in Bear, Delaware.
