Hazel Ewing Jenkins of Colora died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Harford Memorial Hospital. She was 90. She was born October 25, 1922, in Colora, to the late Samuel and Lillian (Garrett) Ewing. Mrs. Jenkins graduated from Colora Public School in 1935, Rising Sun High School in 1939, and attended Goldey Business College from 1940 to 1941. She was part of the WOW (Women Ordinance Workers) during World War II, and spent the rest of her career with the U.S. government at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Bainbridge Naval Training Center, retiring after 47 years of service in March, 1990. She was a very active member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Mrs. Jenkins organized Cub Pack 92 in 1952, serving as den mother for 16 years. She was the first woman in the Chester County Council to receive the Silver Fawn Award. She was involved with the creation of the West Nottingham Academy Parents Association during 1960, and organized the Colora Civic Association where she served as president.
During 1997, she helped author the Colora History Book. Mrs. Jenkins enjoyed being with her family and friends, playing cards, watching sports, and dancing to Big Band music. She is survived by her sons, Wayne Jenkins and wife Evelyn of Canyon, Texas; Kenneth Jenkins of Colora; and Richard Jenkins and wife Tracy of Newark, Del.; grandchildren, Wayne, Michael, Patrick, and Chad Jenkins; great grandchildren, Justin, Ashlyn, Ryan, Amelia, Devin, and Taylor Jenkins; and great great grandchildren, Sunday and Madison Jenkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Jenkins; grandson Travis Jenkins; and brother Garrett Ewing. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, from Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1713 Liberty Grove Road, Colora. A visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Burial followed in West Nottingham Cemetery, Colora. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pleasant UMC or Wounded Warriors in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 S.
