Charles Henry Gant Jr. died May 14, 2014. He was 94. He was born December 29, 1919 in Wilmington Delaware, son of the late Charles H. and Enid Roys Gant. Mr. Gant was a graduate of Wilmington Friends School and Rutgers University. Following graduation, Charles was proudly a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a veteran of World War II. During World War II, he participated in the invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944 also known as "D-Day." He was ranked as 1st Lieutenant and also awarded a Bronze Medal for his act of Bravery in Action during the Battle of the Bulge. After serving, Mr. Gant worked for Delfi American Corp in Wilmington, where he retired there as Vice President of sales.
He was a member of St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church in North East, where he was a past senior warden. He enjoyed fishing and bird watching. Among birders he was affectionately known as "Broadwing Charlie." He was member of the Audubon Society, the Cape May Bird Observatory, the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association, the Cecil Bird Club, and the Harford Bird Club. He was also a volunteer guide at Ashland Nature Center, Fair Hill Nature Center, and Elk Neck State Park. Mr. Gant is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane Hickman Gant, his three children Robert Hickman Gant (Candy Davis), Susan Gant Harris (James Dick Harris), and William Stewart Gant (Nancy Fay); six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Roys Gant and brother-in-law and best friend Robert E. Hickman.
