Solanco's JV boys basketball team split a pair of games at the Octorara JV Shootout Thursday.
The Mules downed the hosts 31-20 in the second game of the afternoon. The inexperienced Solanco JV girls basketball team lost three straight games after opening with a victory. McCaskey dealt the Mules a 38-20 setback last Wednesday. Jen Eberly led Solanco with six points. Paige Borcky added five points and played her best game of the year so far, coach Mike Glackin said. "Inexperience isn't something we can correct in one game," Glackin said. "We're young and we just have to keep coming to work every day, try to be better. The girls have great attitudes and are already showing improvement." Solanco fell 57-23 to Cedar Crest Monday, December 16. Cedar Crest outscored the Mules 24-4 in the first quarter. Nikki Boultinghouse led Solanco with 15 points. "We struggled to take care of the ball which led to easy baskets for them," Glackin said. "Jen Eberly is our best defender right now. She's doing a great job of understanding help position and reacting to the ball. Lots of room for improvement as a team. We just need to get stronger with the ball and be able to make decisions under pressure." The Mules split their first two games of the season the week before. Hempfield handed Solanco a 59-16 defeat December 13. Eberly had eight points and Taylor Stitz scored four. "We were down to seven players because of injuries and struggled with their ball pressure. Right now we have six freshmen and were just trying to make the adjustment to the speed of the game at this level." Solanco started the season with a 25-21 triumph over Garden Spot December 11. Boultinghouse had a team-high six points. "Megan Perry did a great job at point guard distributing the ball and running the offense," said Glackin. "It was good to get a win in the first game of the year with five freshmen starting." The Solanco JV football team routed visiting Elizabethtown 35-8 Monday, October 21.
Quarterback Tyler Turpen and running backs Austin Polizzi, Prosper Eguzouwa and Kyle Allen each turned in a strong performance. Allen and Eguzouwa both scored two touchdowns and Polizzi punched in a score behind the dominant performance of the offensive line – Curtis Herr, Hayden Herr, Christian Weder, JJ Gamber, and Dawson Gote. Cody Kauffman, Keith Carnrike, Blade Sedner, and Jarrett McGuire led a stout Mules' defense. "Overall, it was a great team effort," coach Chris Lenhart said. Lenhart said it may be the final game of the season for Solanco (2-2). "Each week the guys have improved and remained patient, waiting for opportunities to come their way" the coach said. "This group of young players takes pride in battling the varsity offense and defense every week, and were just as much a part of the win (against Elizabethtown in the varsity game) as the guys who were on the field. Coach Hammel, Coach Glackin, and myself are proud of their effort, dedication, hard work, and positive contributions to the Solanco football program." The Solanco JV football team suffered a 19-16 setback to Lampeter-Strasburg Monday, September 23. The Mules "played with great emotion and energy" and with the ball at the end of the game, came up just short of the go-ahead score, coach Chris Lenhart said. Vince Ortiz tossed two touchdown passes, one to Troy Berry and another to Billy Cooney. Prosper Eguzouwa punched in a two-point conversion. The Solanco defense, anchored by J.J. Gamber, Kyle Allen, and Zab Eshleman, recorded their first safety of the season. The Solanco JV football team dropped a 28-6 decision to visiting Oxford Monday, September 16. The Mules' Troy Berry returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown but that was the end of the offense. The Hornets used a strong running game to score four touchdowns. Hayden Herr and Zeb Eshelman both turned in strong performances on defense for Solanco. The loss evened the Mules record at 1-1 after an impressive win over Garden Spot in the opener. "One of the big differences between the last two weeks was the level of energy and emotion the young Mules played with," coach Chris Lenhart said via email. "The energy level, passion and emotion must raise to a consistently higher level to see continued improvement." The Solanco JV football team opened its season with a 28-20 triumph over visiting Garden Spot Monday, September 9. Prosper Eguzouwa returned a fumble and an interception for a touchdown to highlight a strong defensive performance. The defensive line was dominant, recording numerous sacks and tackles for losses. Hayden Herr, Dawson Gote, JJ Gamber, Billy Cooney, and Kodie Conrad anchored the defensive line. The Solanco JV girls softball team had a very successful 2013 season. The Mules went 16-1 with the lone loss coming in a time-shortened game. Solanco hit for a team average of .450 for the season which included 51 extra base hits. The Mules connected on 17 home runs, 10 triples, and 24 doubles. The Mules outscored their opponents 249-29.
