The Solanco girls finished eighth and the boys placed 13th at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet in Ephrata Tuesday, October 20.
Cortney Johnson led the girls squad by earning a medal for the second straight season. "This was one of the very strongest and deep fields we have ever seen with 13 girls running under 20 minutes," said coach Craig Ausel. Solanco's volleyball team lost 3-1 to visiting Manheim Central in the season finale last Wednesday night.
The Barons triumphed 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21. Solanco's Liam Hodgson prevailed in his final race on the Mules' home course Tuesday, October 13.
Hodgson (17:37) topped second place Sam Mancuso of Garden Spot (17:40) with Manheim Township's Brian Delany third in 18:02. "Liam ran a smart and tactical race sitting on Township's Brian Delany for two miles before taking control of the race and finishing in a very commendable 17:37," said coach Craig Ausel. Solanco runners Patrick Workman, Keith Carnrike, and Ben Stickler finished 11-13, running 18:54, 18:55, and 18:56 respectively. It was an emotional Senior Night for coach Ron Miller and the Solanco boys soccer team.
The Mules said goodbye to six seniors who helped transform the program from perennial doormats to a team capable of competing against the section's top sides. The 2015 season did not go as Solanco (4-14) had expected and last Wednesday night's season finale against Manheim Central was a microcosm of the Mules' year. The Solanco girls soccer team ended its home schedule on a positive note, downing Lebanon 4-2.
"It was an emotional night as the seniors were honored during their final home game," said coach Ken Yoder. Molly Briggs, Rauna Curry-Saner, Taylor Fabian, Alexis Garnica, Emily Hobbs, and Katie Kreider each played their last home game. "It was great to get a win for the seniors during their last home game," said Yoder. The Solanco field hockey team lost three games last week.
Lancaster Country Day scored in overtime to top the Mules 1-0 Friday afternoon. Solanco was outshot 9-0. Goalie Allyson Osborne made eight saves. On Tuesday, October 13, Manheim Central downed the Mules 6-0. Solanco's Ethan Cairns finished an outstanding career by shooting an 85 in the first round of the PIAA District 3 golf tournament at Briarwood East Course in York on Friday, October 9.
Cairns' score was six strokes higher than the cut of 79. He began his round on the seventh hole under cool, breezy conditions. After starting bogey, bogey, par, Cairns hit two balls out of bounds and carded a nine on the Par 4 10th hole. Solanco's volleyball team rebounded from two losses to top McCaskey last Thursday.
The Mules prevailed 25-13, 25-13, 25-18. Bekah Borcky led Solanco with seven kills and seven aces. Chelsea Ressler recorded 12 assists and 12 digs. Moria McCarriston notched two blocks. The Solanco girls cross country team went 3-1 in the first home meet of the season Tuesday, October 6. The Mules defeated Warwick 25-30, Columbia 15-55, Lebanon 15-55, and lost to Ephrata 23-34.
Solanco's Cortney Johnson recorded a very solid time of 20:41 to finish second. The junior's time places her fourth on the all-time list for the Mules' home course and second all-time for Solanco girls. "Cortney had a fantastic finish in a very tough field," Mules coach Craig Ausel said. Solanco's JV volleyball team beat visiting Lampeter-Strasburg two games to one on Thursday afternoon, September 8. The Mules won the first game handily, lost the second, and came back to defeat L-S in the third game. Click read more to view gallery.
