The Solanco golf team is tied for second in the Section Two standings after three of the seven section tournaments.
Cocalico (16-2) is first followed by Manheim Central and the Mules (both 12-6), Elizabethtown and Lampeter-Strasburg (both 10-8), Garden Spot (3-15), and Lebanon (0-18). The next Section Two tournament is Wednesday, August 27 at Hawk Valley. The Solanco golf team opened the season by winning a Section Two tournament held at Tanglewood last Thursday.
The host Mules (337) defeated Cocalico (348), Manheim Central (351), Elizabethtown (352), Lampeter-Strasburg (359), Garden Spot (417), and Lebanon (446). Ethan Cairns carded a career-best round of 74 to lead Solanco. He recorded birdies on 6, 10, and 15. At first glance, wrestling and golf seem to have little in common. Unless that first glance includes Solanco High School senior Connor Sheehan. Sheehan has wrestled his way to one state-level competition and is working toward another. He has also qualified for two state-level golf tournaments, the only Solanco golfer ever to do so. There are similarities to the two seemly disparate sports, he said. "In golf, it's almost purely mental," he said. "They're both mental sports and require technique, but with wrestling, you also have to be strong. Solanco's Connor Sheehan made history at the eighth annual PIAA East Regional Golf Tournament, held at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood on Tuesday, October 15.
Sheehan shot a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for third, earning the first-ever region medal for a Mules' golfer. It was a busy and successful week for the Solanco golf team.
