The first time the Solanco girls basketball team defeated Lampeter-Strasburg this season, Mules' coach Chad McDowell referred to it as a "signature win."
Last Thursday night's road triumph over the Pioneers was as sizable as John Hancock's autograph on the Declaration of Independence. Solanco took an substantial stride toward a section title with a convincing 44-25 victory over L-S in West Lampeter. The Solanco boys basketball team lost 58-48 to visiting Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday night, January 24.
The Solanco wrestling team ended its home and league dual meet season in style.
The Mules mauled McCaskey 52-6 Wednesday night, January 23. Jess Cabrera started attending Solanco girls basketball games as a six-year-old, looking up to the players, and hoping she would one day have her name on the banner listing the school's 1,000 point scorers.
Twelve years later, the Mules' senior guard achieved that lofty goal. Needing 15 points to reach the grand milestone, Cabrera made history at the halftime buzzer and finished with 20 points in the Mules' 56-22 triumph over visiting Garden Spot Tuesday night, January 22. Entering Thursday night's game against outmanned Octorara, the Solanco girls basketball team wanted to use its entire roster while winning without suffering any injuries, hone a variety of offensive sets, and put Jess Cabrera in position to score her 1,000th career point at home.
The Mules easily accomplished their objectives by beating the Braves 87-8. The Solanco boys basketball team lost 58-53 to visiting Manheim Central Tuesday night, January 15.

Immediately following the Solanco girls basketball team's milestone win over Lampeter-Strasburg, coach Chad McDowell started making sure his squad would avoid a letdown in its next game vs. Cocalico.
He was quite confident the Mules would be ready and his faith was rewarded with a 47-34 triumph over the Eagles Friday night. The Mules experienced déja vu during a 53-36 loss to host Lampeter-Strasburg Tuesday night, January 8.
It was the second straight game, Solanco struggled early against a zone fullcourt press and fell behind 10-0. The same thing happened in a lopsided loss to Garden Spot five days earlier. Garden Spot scored the game's first 10 points and went on to an 81-58 victory over the host Solanco boys basketball team Friday night, January 4.
The Spartans' dynamic guard Keontae Nunn poured in 34 points with 16 coming in the first half and 16 more in the fourth quarter as the visitors pulled away. The Solanco wrestling team is gaining valuable experience during the most challenging stretch of the dual meet season.
Facing some of the toughest opponents on its schedule, the Mules are 1-3. Solanco lost 51-26 to visiting Conestoga Valley Wednesday, January 2. |
