The Solanco wrestling team is gaining valuable experience during the most challenging stretch of the dual meet season. Facing some of the toughest opponents on its schedule, the Mules are 1-3. Solanco lost 51-26 to visiting Conestoga Valley Wednesday, January 2. Chase Charles got the Mules off to a good start with a third period pin over Cameron Kistler.
Conestoga Valley then won the next seven bouts, five by fall and two via a Mules forfeit, to take a 42-6 advantage. Solanco finally got back into the win column when Nick Yannutz (195) flattened Eddie Lopez in 1:14. The Mules prevailed in the final three bouts of the match. Dom Flatt (106) won by fall. Jackson Houghton (113) triumphed by a 10-2 major decision and Kyle Morrison (120) posted a 16-5 major decision. "I think some of our guys that have varsity experience did a nice job," Solanco coach Tony Mendez said. "Nick Yannutz going out there at 195 had a big win. I think we started the match real well with Chase Charles, another guy with varsity experience. That was a real tough kid he faced and he wrestled well. In the last three bouts, these are guys who have a little bit more experience. They wrestled really well. So that was good that we can take that [from the match]." Solanco was relatively competitive in the six matches they lost by fall, but paid a steep price for little lapses. Mendez is confident the Mules can eliminate those miscues through hard work and experience. "It's tough because you know what the scoreboard shows, when they're in a match [losing] by four or five points, and then they give up a fall," said Mendez. "So the scoreboard is going to show worse, but the guys are out there battling. We've just got to get rid of some of those small mistakes that put us on our backs. Those are the kinds of things you want to fix. You've got to be positive and keep working in the room and you'll get better." Comments are closed.
