It was a busy and successful week for the Solanco golf team. The Mules swept a pair of Section Two tournaments. On Thursday August 22, Solanco hosted the third section tournament of the season at Tanglewood.
The Mules (322) downed Manheim Central (339), Lampeter-Strasburg (354), Cocalico (362), Elizabethtown (377), Garden Spot (388) and Lebanon (482). Connor Sheehan again turned in the low score shooting an even par 72. Sheehan was able to offset bogeys at 2, 3 and 9 and a double bogey on 18 with birdies on 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13. Sheehan said this about his round, “The only strokes I gave away were putting, my bogeys were the result of three putts and the double was actually a four-putt. Tee to green I played extremely well, I just need to practice some putting.” Jimmy Howell shot a 78. Ethan Cairns carded an 85 with an eagle on the par 5 10th hole. Jarrett Hassinger had an 87. Darren Rutledge shot a 99 and Ethan McCardell had a 108. “Jarrett Hassinger continues to improve and aided his score by chipping in on the 17th hole for birdie, coach Greg Minnich said. "We are trying for some more consistent play out of our 4, 5 and 6 guys so we still have work to do and room to improve," On Tuesday August 20, Solanco traveled to Hawk Valley for a Section Two tournament hosted by Garden Spot. Solanco came out on top with a score of 332 followed by Manheim Central 351, LS 358, Garden Spot 369, Cocalico 380, E-town 382 and Lebanon 463. Sheehan posted low round of the day with a 68 which was 15 strokes better than the second best score. Sheehan started his round with a double bogey on the 8th hole (his starting hole) but he then proceeded to birdie the 9th, 11th, 15th. 18th, 3rd and 6th hole, completing his four-under par round. Howell had an 85, followed by Cairns (89), Hassinger (90), McCardell (97) and Rutledge (100). “Connor had an awesome round especially after starting with a double bogey but that is what Connor is capable of doing," said Minnich. "The scoring was higher at the Hawk but Jarrett Hassinger had a good round as only nine scores were lower than his 90 and three of those were his teammates.” After three of seven LL League Section Two tournaments the standings are: Solanco 18-0, Manheim Central 15-3, L-S 10-8, Cocalico 8-10, E-town 7-11, Garden Spot 5-13 and Lebanon 0-18. On Monday, August 19, Solanco traveled to Overlook Golf Course to participate in the non-league Glen-Gery Brick Shootout. Wyomissing and Manheim Township tied at the top with a score of 313, however Wyomissing took home the title winning in a playoff. West York was third with 314 followed by Solanco 325, Dallastown 337, Lancaster Catholic 343 and Lancaster Mennonite 379. Solanco was led by Sheehan 77, Howell 78, Cairns 78, McCardell 92, Hassinger 96 and Rutledge 99. "We gained some valuable experience at Overlook which will also host this year’s L-L League Championship," said Minnich. "The guys realize they can compete with some good teams but they must all bring their “A” game.” Comments are closed.
