Solanco's Connor Sheehan made history at the eighth annual PIAA East Regional Golf Tournament, held at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood on Tuesday, October 15. Sheehan shot a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for third, earning the first-ever region medal for a Mules' golfer. Sheehan began his round on the seventh hole and carded pars on his first two holes before a birdie on the par three ninth. On the back nine he made bogeys on 11 and 15 but finished the back with birdies on 16 and 18 to shoot even par 36.
After the birdie on 18 he made six consecutive pars on holes 1-6 to complete a one-under score of 35 on the front nine and post a 71. The top 3 finishers and ties from the field of 50 AAA players earned medals. Kevin Connors of Bishop Shanahan won the AAA boys title by posting a five-under par round of 67. "The warm weather led to some great scoring conditions," Solanco coach Jeff Minnich said. The top 24 players qualified for the State Tournament held October 21-22 at Heritage Hills in York. The cut came at 75 with four golfers playing off for the last two spots. To demonstrate the caliber of play, last year Sheehan shot 76 to tie for 10th and earn a state berth. This year, 76 did not even make the cut. "Even though the weather was great and scoring conditions were good it was good to see Connor get rewarded for his hard work," Minnich said. "It is tough competing in a one day event with an unknown cut line where a couple of bad shots could end your season but Connor played awesome and made Solanco golf proud.” Comments are closed.
